Break My Soul
Show notes
On a recent Daddy-Daughter date, we were jamming in the car to Beyonce’s Break My Soul. It provided the opportunity to talk with my 7 year old about resilience in life & what it takes to not let others break her soul.

Count money, man.
Money, man.
Stacked riches.
I'm trying to told him I'm a beast, but...
What's up, gang?
Welcome to another episode of The Grindcast.
Get ready.
It's a new day.
And we're going to have a shot of espresso today.
Not a whole cup of coffee.
We're not going to be 45 minutes, 35 minutes.
I just want 10, 15 minutes of a double espresso for you.
And I wanted to just encourage you
by what I was telling my daughter yesterday.
My daughter, I went...
I had daddy, daughter, date recently.
My daughter's seven.
And we were listening to...
I think it was Beyonce.
You won't break my soul.
And I started telling...
I started telling my daughter in the car.
I think it was the right time.
She's seven.
And I was explaining to her, you know, the song...
You won't break my soul.
And I was telling her that, you know, in life,
the more success that she has, you know, she's in dance.
And, you know, she's pretty good at it.
I think she's cute, unbiased, you know.
So I'm telling her, you know, over time,
you're going to have people that hate on you, Sienna.
Over time, you're going to have people that speak negatively about you.
There's going to be people that are mean to you.
There's going to be girls that are mean to you.
And I want to make sure that you can handle it.
And you don't let these people break your soul.
And we got into that conversation.
I said, do you know why people are going to be mean to you?
You know why there's going to be times that people are going to be...
Not so nice to you.
And there'll be other lessons to this on how can you learn from,
you know, from those things.
You know, I remember asking my mentor, one of my mentors,
you know, how he handles people that hate on him.
And he said, the first thing I try to do is ask myself, is it true?
Is it true?
So, that's another lesson that I'll try to teach my daughter.
But, you know, oftentimes anybody that's been successful at anything,
at anything, anything can look back to times where people hated them just because they were doing well,
just because they were pretty, just because they were handsome,
just because they were successful, just because they were...
And I remember, you know, I tell people, growing up, growing up poor,
and then we moved into lower middle class.
I was riding with my longtime friend yesterday,
and we were looking at houses and stuff, and he was saying,
man, remember your house, you lived in the attic.
We had one bedroom, and you lived in the attic,
that we made it... we put carpet up there,
a bedroom up there.
I tell people, that's why I was short.
You know, a shark, you put a shark in a tank,
and it can only grow as big as the tank, right?
So, I said, what a reason why, which ain't the reason,
but I joke with people and say that's the reason,
it's because my roof was so low, I had to stay hunched down,
my body had to stay short, and so we were talking about...
Now, look at the situation of going from living in the attic to a better life.
And I said, well, yeah, that was the house in high school.
How about the house I grew up in?
That one I didn't even have a room.
I had to share a room with my mother.
My great-grandmother was right across the hallway
on the east side of Youngstown, one bathroom, two bedrooms,
fruit seller, small kitchen, small living room with a little...
one of those TVs that you had to click it,
and hope that it would work.
We would put hangars on the back of the antennas
to try to get it to work sometimes.
And so I've had an opportunity to walk through different phases of life,
and I remember as a young kid growing up to where...
I look at, and I'm not going to name the people that put this in my head
because I don't want to...
I talk badly about people that I love and care about,
but I was almost raised, not by my mother,
but I was almost raised to not like people
that were from other areas of the city outside of Youngstown
that had money that were...
in different affluent areas in our area.
And I didn't like the people because they were from a certain part of town
and they had a little bit more means.
I automatically hated them.
I automatically didn't like them.
I automatically had judgment towards these people.
And then I walked through that to lower middle class,
to middle class for a couple of years,
and then, you know,
Lord will have it over time in the business that I'm in currently right now
that I would have a chance to make it to the other side
and probably be considered in the category of people that as a child I would hate.
And so I've had a chance to look at all...
I've got a chance to be in every single face, which is rare.
Some people do it, but not a lot of people have a chance to...
The wealthy people don't always get a chance to grow up poor.
And the poor people don't always get a chance to see what it's like to be wealthy.
And the middle class don't get a chance to see what it's like to be dead broke.
And the middle class don't always get a chance to see what it's like to be wealthy.
But I've had it inside, look at all of this.
And I could tell you, sometimes people are just mentally wired
and taught to hate people that have.
And so I was going through this with my daughter of like just understand,
why do you think people are not going to always be...
Why do you think people are going to be mean to you sometimes?
Why? And I had her list some things and then I went on to tell her,
she said, well, what do you do when that happens?
I said, you don't have to always respond, you try to ignore them,
you protect yourself if they physically try to harm you.
That's different. But you ignore the people.
Typically those people have something sad in their heart,
in their life, something's going on deep inside them that causes them to want to hate on you.
And so we try to pray for those people.
I want you to lean on God during those times, bring it, bring it to daddy.
But you cannot let people see you down because of words that they got to say.
Because if every time somebody says something negative about you,
you have an emotional reaction, they can control everything going on in your life.
Other people should not be able to control the joy, happiness, peace in your life by what somebody has to say.
We're in the United States of America where people could say whatever they want.
And this is why in the business we started the good news.
We got a news thing in our business called the good news because I would look at the news.
And when I watched the news, I would realize that the majority of the news was all negative.
The hurricane that blew down everybody's house.
The person that got robbed, this person that got sick, this bridge that collapsed all.
And all those things are happening, I understand.
But how about all the positive things?
Why are we not shedding light?
Why are they not 90% of the positive?
Why are we going over the divide in this community versus the people over here that are rocking together?
Because for every negative you could find a bunch of positive.
And I don't know if it's because people follow the negative more than they like to follow the positive.
But all I know is you can't let it break your soul.
And so then I went on to tell her and I made her recited.
I said, tough people, or tough times don't last.
Tough people do.
Tough times don't last. Tough people do.
And so then I had her explain to me, what do you think that means?
That tough times don't last. Tough people do.
She got it. She was like, yeah, you know, you'll go through things in life that are make you sad or things that are hard.
But it doesn't last forever.
And I was telling her in the moment when you're in those moments it's just a season.
Yesterday it was snowing.
It was cold over here.
So I said, see right now how it's not nice outside it's cold.
Pretty soon flowers are going to be out and it's going to be sunshine again.
It's not always going to be like this.
And so we know it's not always going to be like this.
We know summer's coming.
We know at some point you're going to be in a swimming pool, but right now it's freezing cold.
That's just a season.
And so you'll go through times in your life where it's hard times.
But you got to remind yourself and understand that it's just a season, honey.
And that this too shall pass, but tough people last.
And so I and she said, what that means, you know, if you don't let it get you down.
That tough people do last.
And I went on to tell her that, you know, part of that toughness is just be amenily and spiritually strong.
To remind yourself that these tough times are not always going to last.
It's just a period of time in a moment.
And that's what I want you to know is that tough times don't last.
Tough people do.
Tough times don't last.
Tough people do.
I always talk to people about adversity.
And when we talk about adversity, it says, well, in adversity,
when it comes to adversity, either you're heading towards an adversity and you don't know,
you're in the middle of an adversity right now,
or you just came out of one.
But one thing's for sure in life is adversity is always going to be there.
And it's not only what happens to you.
It's how you respond to those things that dictates where you're going to go
and dictates the person that you're going to become.
The only way to have everybody talk great about you,
the only way for you to not have adversity is to do nothing and be nothing.
And so if you're out there pushing right now,
if you're out there growing a family, if you're out there growing a business,
if you're out there growing yourself, if you're out there striving to go to the next level,
one thing's for sure is that you probably are dealing with some adversity or you're about to,
or you just got done dealing with some adversity, get comfortable there.
We got to graduate from the you, the university of adversity, graduate from it,
get comfortable there, understand this too shall pass.
It won't always last. Learn what you need to learn in that moment.
What don't kill you only will make you stronger, strengthen yourself mentally and spiritually,
get to a place of focusing on yourself internally.
Look at how great that you got it.
Look at how blessed that you are even amongst the hard times,
even amongst the obstacles, even a month, what do you have?
Do you have your health?
Do you have people that love you?
Do you have people that care for you?
Even though you're going through adversity right now,
you notice somebody in the hospital right now,
somebody struggling battling for one more breath, they're praying right now,
they're on their deathbed and they're praying, they would switch places with you in a minute.
In a minute.
Tough times don't last, tough people do.
You got to look back and all the times in your life,
look what you've gone through already, you're 50 years old, you're 40 years old,
you're 20 years old, there's no way it's all been sunshine or rainbows.
Just remind yourself, what have you come through so far?
I talked to one of my friends recently that's going through some adversity and stressed out about stuff.
I said, bro, you lost your mother, your mother died, man.
This ain't adversity to you.
This ain't stressed to you.
When they say you so far, you've survived 100% of the worst days of your life,
bro, you lost your mother and you survived.
You lost your father and you survived.
You lost your best friend and you survived.
You lost your wife, you lost your husband and you survived.
You lost your grandmother and you survived.
Your best friend turned her back on you and you survived.
We survived 9-11 in America.
We've survived crashes, stock market crashes, real estate crashes,
this and people are all worked, this is a nation, we'll get up again.
We'll survive.
Matter of fact, during tough times, that's where the dogs come out.
That's where the leaders come out.
That's where the strong men, strong women, strong leaders.
That's where the strong people come out.
Not under times of comfort and peace.
The character development is in times of obstacles and adversity.
Count it all joy.
Because when you look back on your life, you look back at the things that were there that hurt you
and you could look at how it made you stronger and made you better
if you're looking for ways to allow it to make you better.
And so I know some of you out there may be going through some tough times.
Remind yourself, this too shall pass, this season shall pass.
Tough times don't last, tough people do.
If you're doing something great and striving and going to the next level
there may be some people looking for ways, looking for things for you to fall down.
When you fall down, 50 people notice that you slip or you fell down.
When you jump up and you thrive and you crush it and you rock it,
there may be five cheering and clapping noticing how well you did.
But 50 clapping when you fall.
Don't let that discourage you.
That's the pressure that every king, every queen, every president, every CEO,
every successful person, every successful athlete, every person is felt
that is accomplished greatness.
You're meant for greatness.
Don't let those things hold you down.
Let those things lift you up.
Don't let those things discourage you.
Let those things inspire you in spite of.
the negativity. Don't let it pull you down. Let it lift you up. All right. Thank you.
We appreciate you. If you know people that can use some encouragement by this message, send it
to them. You could be doing anything with your life right now. You chose to give us 15 minutes of
your life and for that we're grateful. Tough times don't last. Tough people do. Thanks for joining us
on another episode of the Grandcast. Get ready. It's a new day.
