Count money, man.
Money that grits is fine.
I told him, I'm a beast.
But what's up, gang?
Welcome to the grind cast.
Stop it, area's here.
Get ready to do it.
New day.
What's up, gang?
Welcome to another episode of the grind cast.
Get ready.
It's a new day.
And we're going to be talking about some time management.
And are you an initiator or a reactor when it comes to game planning your life and game
planning your day?
And so, I think the analogy that we need to use today, and this one comes up a lot.
You know, what do you do to manage time and give me some time management tricks or secrets
or tips?
And there is no way to manage time.
Time is keeps going no matter what.
There's no way to manage it.
But what we can do is stay ahead of it, prioritize it, and spend it properly.
And so, right now, you're either an initiator, which is where we need to be, or a reactor
when it comes to planning.
Being a reactor will bring you a lot of stress, a lot of anxiety in life, and a lot of drop
balls.
You can't be a professional and drop the ball a lot, right?
So we have to drop as little balls as possible.
And that's going to happen from being an initiator, being a planner, looking ahead.
When you see, you know, when I start developing people, I spend time with people in our business
and one of the things that I've done better in 19, and I plan on sticking with in 2020,
is making sure that I'm spending my time.
Can you bring that over here?
Don't worry, we won't get you on camera.
No, we won't.
Here, thanks, Katie.
Spending time with people that are in their first year of business, first six months of
business.
And oftentimes what I've had to do internally is check myself and build in some patience
for these people, because it takes, I've noticed a lot of people, it takes them time to adjust
to new duties and leadership.
And a lot of times these people just mismanaged their time, they end up late sometimes,
or they forget.
And I just know this is something that people need to get a better grip on.
So what we need to do is we got to look at this like an architect.
If you're going to build this life, if you're going to build a house, the first thing that
happens, and we're in the process of building a house right now, my wife and I, and the
first thing that happens is this long process of developing the right drawings, doing
it the right way, everything being measured out properly.
And then it's not easy.
I don't want to disrespect the amount of work that goes into building the house.
But once it's on paper, then it's just doing the work after that.
And so I would like to encourage you, this is something that I got better at over time.
I used to be the exact same way.
I remember my first couple of years in business being just frustrated and stressed out all
of the time, running from this thing to that or meetings or forgetting something or, you
know, these just small things that if I were to go back, I would be better at that I've
become better at over time, which is to draw it all out on paper.
So when you start your week, going into every week, look at the things that you need to
accomplish and put them all out on paper and then put them in your schedule, lock them in
a schedule on paper.
I like to do it on my phone in a calendar.
And so it tells me everything from with time I got to wake up, drive time is in there, exercise
time.
I even put in there when I'm going to eat.
I try to break my whole schedule down and make sure that important things are taking
precedent.
The after people organize in plan, the next thing that we got to do to get better at is
you got to look at you, have you ever heard the term time as money?
So time is money.
And how you spend your money is going to dictate where your life goes.
So same thing with your time.
If I were to tell you right now, you know, this double shot of espresso was $40, 50 bucks.
If I was a coffee company, I would go out of business and let's just cure cancer.
I would go out of business.
Nobody wants to spend 50 bucks on a double espresso, but people will spend 50 minutes of their
time on something stupid.
That's not going to give them the return.
Like you either understand time is money or you don't understand the time is money in
regards to business.
And so why would I spend 50 bucks on a double espresso?
Why would I spend an hour, two hours, three hours on something that's not going, it's not
worth it and it's not going to give me the return on investment?
Then what happens is people spend so much of their time on the things that don't kick back
a return that they don't have the chunk of time that they need, the investment of money
slash time to put towards the things that will give them a big return that may cost them
more time.
They don't have the time left to do the things that are important.
And so, you know, you've all probably heard the term 20% of what you do will bring you
80% of the results.
And every person listening, whether it's a sport, task in growing a team as a coach or
in business, you got to look and think, what are those 20% of the tasks that are going
to give me 80% of my return?
And am I spending 80% of my time on that 20%?
Because if you spend that 80% on these other things, you don't have what it requires you
to be able to focus and zone in on the things that are going to give you the biggest return
on your time.
In our business, it's just people.
After recruiting the right people, it's spending time with people and developing people.
And I watch so many people get caught up on paper or other things versus spending time
developing people.
If you want to grow your team, you have to grow people.
If you want to grow a company, you have to grow people.
But people don't typically spend enough time developing people because they've spent all
their money on things that aren't really going to give them a big return.
So, let me break this down into an example.
When you look at classifying and prioritizing tasks, let's look at them and I got this from
my man, John Maxwell.
I'm excited I get to spend some time with John Maxwell here in London going to London
to spend some time with John Maxwell personally, which was amazing to have that introduction
come from coach slash president Trussell and we're going to be traveling to London and
spending time in Winston Churchill's house with John Maxwell, who has been one of the
most influential people in my life, probably the most influential person in my life that
I've never met other than Jesus Christ.
When I look at this one, it's a good way to break it down for you.
So, he broke this down into four quadrants and so that's high importance, high urgency.
I'll come back through it.
High importance, low urgency, number two, number three, low importance, high urgency and
number four, low importance, low urgency.
All right, so back up to the top, high importance, high urgency.
These are the things that we want to tackle first, high importance, highly urgent.
So what things in your life or in your business are highly urgent and highly important, like
the most important things in your business to make your business grow.
Put those things, it's like the science project.
You put two big rocks in first and then you pour in all the little pebbles around it,
no fill up.
But if you put all the little pebbles in first and you put the two big rocks in, they don't
fit.
What are the things that are important to your organization or to your team or to your
life or whatever it is?
And they're also urgent.
We got to do these things right now.
If I'm a football coach and we're coming up in December, January, February, we just got
done with the season, something that's highly important and highly urgent is probably recruiting
athletes.
That would be something that needs to be tackled first currently right now because it's
urgent.
There's only a certain amount of time that we got to get this recruiting process done.
And it's probably the most important thing to our team.
This one is high importance, low urgency.
So this is something that is important but it doesn't have to happen immediately right
now.
So sometimes people will mess their days up doing this stuff.
So it is important but it doesn't need to be done right now.
They want to start doing those things and taking up times for stuff that should be done
urgently that are important stuff that you could put off that is important.
You got to put those things off a little bit.
And so what you do for those things is you make a note to handle those things, set a deadline
and fit those into your daily routine.
The things that are important but not urgent.
So what are those things that are important but not extremely urgent.
Those things you can plan for, put them in your schedule, make sure that they're not
done during prime time hours unless you got the things that are highly important and
highly urgent done.
First, the third thing is low importance but highly urgent.
So it's not super, super, super important but it's urgent.
We got to get it done right now.
So you find quick, efficient ways to get these things done with minimal, personal involvement
and time.
If possible, you try to delegate them.
Let me give you an example.
Cutting a grass.
Let it get too long.
It looks trashy.
It looks ridiculous.
Maybe you got a couple of weeks to get this done or a week to get it done.
Coming up on that deadline to get it done.
It's not extremely important but it's urgent because you only got a couple of days.
Let me see if I can hire somebody to get that done.
Paperwork.
I got all this paperwork to fill out.
All these things to fill out.
All this people start bombarding themselves with paperwork and not people work or process
work.
These are hours of their day that they're filling out paperwork and doing things that
they could have paid somebody 10 bucks an hour to do.
20 bucks an hour to do.
Time is money.
Remember that.
You are looking at what is your time worth per hour.
If you figure your time per hour is worth 100 bucks per hour, 50 bucks per hour, every
time you can invest 10 bucks to take care of that hour for you and spend it the right
way, you made 40 bucks worth a time.
The last one is low importance and low urgency.
These things not important, not urgent.
Don't have to happen right now, not even extremely important.
Don't ever schedule these things during prime time.
These aren't things that have to happen.
When you have people in your business to be work with and you're doing these things that
are not important and not even urgent during the time where you could be spending time with
those people or doing a task that's going to kick you 80% of the results back, you're
mismanaging how you're spending your time.
You're spending $50 on a double espresso.
What I would do with those things is you find a one hour block a week for these things
and chip away at it.
It may because it's not urgent.
It may take you a month to get this done.
It may take you two months to get this done, but block an hour or so a week and start
chipping away at it, chipping away at it.
If it's possible, delegate it.
If it's not even extremely urgent or important, just get rid of these things.
Sometimes you just got to get rid of this wasted thing that you're doing that.
Ask yourself, is what I'm doing, helping me or hurting me?
And is this completely necessary?
Start to weed things out.
Instead of just doing right, we got to be able to do the right things.
Choosing what you're going to do with your time and how you're going to go about it, when
you're going to go about it is being proactive.
Reactive is losing.
being reactive, losing, proactive, choosing to start winning.
Are you being reactive or are you being proactive?
When you're reactive, it stresses your life out.
You're always feeling like I'm late to this.
I forgot about that.
Now I'm mad about that.
Then you start making excuses.
I had this, I had my kids, I forgot that,
and then you get mad at the whole,
well really you should just be mad at yourself.
You gotta look ahead and start to plan
and stop being so reactive to where the world is throwing you
by the seat of your pants versus you're looking
at how I'm about to spend my time.
I got so much money, how am I going to invest this money
to give me a return?
How am I going to invest my time to give me a return?
If you got things you could spend 10 hours a week on,
20 hours a week that are going to create more money
and more time for you down the road,
those are the things that you should be spending your time
on making sure that happens every single week,
not getting bogged down with the things
that are not urgent, not important.
Anticipate what problems can possibly come up
and look at people as assets.
People are not liabilities, they're assets.
So what do you do with assets?
You invest into them.
Are you looking at the people that you're working with
as assets or liabilities?
When you start to pour, that's a whole new message.
We're gonna do a whole message on that.
But when you start to invest time and things
into people, they appreciate like assets.
You can't just leave them there.
And so ask yourself, if I'm in a people person business,
am I spending time with people?
If you're a reactor, you're always repairing things,
living in the moment.
So I was late for that meeting.
Now I got to repair that situation, apologize,
make excuses, whatever it is.
So if you're a reactor, you're always repairing
from what happens with the results of being a reactor,
which is stressful and disorganized
and causes a whirlwind in your life,
reacting to problems, stuff like that.
And so I just wanna encourage you
as we wrap this stuff up, action items, action plan.
Write down, and that's another thing, man.
You have to look at, when you put pen to paper
and you write things down and keep them in front of you,
you'll be blown away at how many of those things end up
jumping off that paper and happening.
If you could just take the time to write it down.
Write down on paper.
What are the most important things
that you do in your chosen field to be great at currently
right now?
What are they?
Well, what are the things that are gonna bring you 80%
of the return?
What are those things?
Who are those people?
And then what are the things that maybe aren't so important
that you can write down,
that you know that you've been spending your time on
or the wrong time of the day on
that can be delayed to later or not prime time hours,
write those down.
What things are probably a part of that 80%
that's not gonna give me the major return.
Part of the 80% that gives me 20% of the return.
Doesn't mean we completely ignore that,
but you can't let that make you spend all your time
where you don't have time on the priorities.
Write that stuff down.
And start to gauge how well you're doing this,
reminding yourself of the quadrants,
the rocks in the science experiment,
put the big rocks in first through the most important things first,
plan your schedule out in advance.
You can't come into Wednesday and not already looked at Wednesday.
You can't come into Thursday and not only not already looked
at your schedule for Thursday.
You can't come into Monday and didn't already look
at your schedule for the whole week.
Draw out and start mapping out your whole week in advance.
Plan it all out in advance.
When you're gonna eat, do the best you can.
When you're gonna eat, when you're gonna drive,
when you're gonna work out,
when you're gonna take care of yourself,
when you're gonna spend time with your family,
when you have date night,
when you're gonna pour into these people,
who are those people?
What are you gonna go over?
What's the strategy?
When you're gonna work, put it all on paper,
write it all down and watch how fast your life is,
watch how much stuff you're able to do,
and how much time you still have leftover.
Watch how your stress level goes down,
your efficiency and effectiveness goes up.
Watch how much better you feel.
Watch how much stuff gets done in your business
or chosen endeavor that you feel at the end of the week.
Yeah, we got better today.
I got better today.
Just by prioritizing your time,
assigning the right amount of time
to the things that bring you the most results,
kicking out the stuff that bogs you down
and being proactive in the planning and preparation
for greatness.
Hopefully this stuff helps.
If you guys don't mind if this helps you,
you know people that can benefit from this stuff,
please share this with other people
that we can make a difference in their life.
