Money, man.
I'm trying to talk to my beast blood.
What's up gang?
Welcome back to another episode of The Grindcast.
Get ready.
It's a new day.
Eight reasons.
Self-discipline is crucial.
We're going to talk about self-discipline today.
And I think if you can get some self-discipline in your life, it will change your life.
You literally just take control of your own destiny.
And the great thing about it is it doesn't take a certain level of IQ or SAT or ACT score
or a master's degree.
But if you can get your master's degree in self-discipline, it'll take you super, super,
super far because most people don't got it.
And most people that do have it didn't always have it.
And so if you don't have it, I don't want you to get down on yourself and think that you
have no choice.
Most people that do have it didn't have it at one point in their life.
And so if you don't have self-control and self-discipline, then you're not in control.
And so let's start listening out some of the reasons and the things to be aware of.
And so number one on the list is instant gratification.
It takes self-discipline to not give in to instant gratification because typically the right
choice for your life long term means denying yourself what you want short term instantly
in that moment.
Discipline is about delaying your wants what you want to do right now in replace of the
thing that you need in order to build success.
When you give in to instant gratification, it not only does it reduce the efficiency,
but it quickly becomes expensive because you got to pay a fricking price for your lack
of discipline in the short term thing right then and there.
So what do I mean?
Well, instant gratification in a conversation.
I want to just say something on my mind and my heart right now.
It makes me feel better to get this off my chest, but it can cause you problems in that
relationship or your up late having some drinks and make a bad decision and instantly it
feels good to punch somebody in the face or instantly it feels good to go cheat on the
person and go sleep with somebody else.
And then long term you suffer the consequences.
Long term you got to go to jail, you got to get an attorney or you got to have, you
know issues that sometimes are beyond repair.
And so it's the instant gratification that that is going to take self discipline to go
to where you want to go because man instead of working this weekend, I'm going to go to
the concert instant gratification.
I'm going to skip a workout and sleep in instant gratification, but long term it compounds
and doesn't move you in the right direction.
Next thing, unreliable motivation.
And so success is compounding interests.
It's about repeating good habits over and over and over and over and over and over again.
Motivation is unreliable.
It can change hour by hour.
We often have little control sometimes over motivation, but we can control our self discipline.
We can commit to our success in small ways every day regardless of our motivation levels.
And so if you're waiting for yourself to always be motivated to do something, you need
to replace that need with discipline.
Yeah, we want to be motivated.
Yes, it helps to be inspired on a daily basis.
Yes, we recommend trying to listen to something or do something that helps to motivate you
on a daily basis like taking a bath or taking a shower or brushing your teeth.
Yes, to all of those things, but you're not always going to feel like doing what you need
to do.
And if you're always relying upon this feeling, you're always going to come short because
to go to where you want to go, you're going to have to have discipline standing in the gap
between what you feel like doing and what you know you need to do that is going to have
to stand in the middle and say, yeah, I know you don't feel like doing it, but we got
to go ahead and do it anyway to take us to where we need to be.
That takes self discipline.
Poor decision making.
Number three, lack of discipline lets our emotions take control of our reactions, responses
and decisions.
So being emotionally impulsive and making those types of decisions can make or break your
success in building what you want to build down, down the road.
And so we have to be able to take responsibility and have discipline in our emotions because
if you react all the time to what your emotion is telling you to do or what your emotions
want you to do, I mean, that's like an animal, right?
It's hungry to eat.
Animal wants to bite, they bite, want to run outside, they run outside.
And so if you're always held hostage and victim to your emotions, which can go up and down,
then you're going to be held hostage to your own levels of success.
Number four, time management takes self discipline because long lasting success requires
work.
And work takes time.
Lack of discipline is what prevents us from getting enough done in a day and then tasks
start to pile up over time because we're not disciplined in our structure of our schedule.
And so we have discipline and time management.
You can't manage time.
We all got 24 hours in the clock right now to clock's ticking.
You can't manage time.
But what you can do when we say time management is prioritize your time, have discipline that
here's when the meeting stops.
Here's when the meeting starts.
Here's what I'm supposed to do in my schedule.
Having a scheduled plan on when you're supposed to go to bed, when you're supposed to wake up
and sticking to that schedule will help you in an area of discipline such as time.
And you all know that time is money.
Number five, inconsistent habits.
A lack of discipline can break the pattern of valuable habits that you're trying to accumulate,
which will limit your ability to build long term success.
Okay, even worse, a lack of good habits, guess what that leaves room for.
Bad habits.
So everything in life is habits.
It's first you have a thought, then you have action, then you have continued action.
And then those things start to form your habits.
And we all know the saying that your habits form your life.
And so discipline in what habits that you're currently creating, what eating habits do
you have takes discipline, what sleeping habits do you have takes discipline, what spiritual
habits do you have takes discipline, what relationship habits do you have.
All these things take discipline in your life.
And I watched maybe I'll sum it up with Nick Saban talking about discipline.
Let's go number six, self reflection.
That takes discipline.
Without self reflection, we can never increase our performance.
We will continue to make poor decisions and limit our own level of overall success
if we're not looking and having self reflection.
It's easy to look at others and point out what they're doing wrong or what they can do
better.
That's easy.
But to really look within and say, what could I do better?
What things am I doing in my life that I could do better than I'm not doing right that I
could do better?
That type of self reflection.
All the time I hear people, this is the argument I got in.
Okay, what percentage of that was yours?
If zero percent is not your fault at all, out of your control, 100% completely your fault.
What percentage of the situation or the argument or the situation, what percent would you take
any ownership over at all?
Because if the answer's none all the time, you have an ego problem and you're not looking
internally, you're not looking at yourself, you're not having self reflection in order to
grow and get to the next level and you're probably lacking humility and you have to start
to look at, yeah, maybe it's not all on you.
I'm not saying mentally abuse yourself.
I'm telling yourself you're horrible.
I'm saying just have some reflection and say, on what area could I have reacted responded
differently?
What could I have done differently?
Yeah, I got into that situation.
There was nothing I could have done about it, but it was four o'clock in the morning.
Should you have been out at four o'clock in the morning?
What percentage of that is on you?
Did you have to respond that way?
What percentage of that was on you?
So try to look at things internally.
Number seven, humility.
That one is critical in self discipline and having discipline because it takes discipline
to have humility.
It's important to have a great mentor to help you overcome ego.
Like who calls you out on your shit?
That's what I want to know.
Do you have anybody in your life that can tell you, man, your ego's out there?
You're out of control.
Or you're not doing the right things.
If you don't have anybody in your life that cares about you, that you've allowed to pour
into your life and tell you when your shit's out of order, you're in a dangerous place.
You got to find somebody like you.
For me, it helped me to have a couple mentors that I confided in and trust in.
And it didn't always feel good.
I didn't always taste good.
I've had points where my mentor was so hard on me.
I wouldn't talk to him for a week.
I wouldn't talk to him.
He was just so hard on me.
And I'm so grateful that he told me the things that I needed to hear, not what I wanted
to hear because nobody else was going to say it.
So check your ego and check your humility.
Are you being, you know, those that humble themselves will be exalted, those that exalt
themselves will be humbled?
And so it takes discipline to have humility.
I didn't say lot confidence.
I think a lot of times people don't understand the difference.
You can be extremely confident.
You should be extremely confident.
You got to walk with some swag.
But being humble also.
And so I think ask people around you how you're doing there.
If you don't know, you may think, I'm great, man, I'm humble.
I know I've been humble.
I challenge you.
Get out of your comfort zone.
I'm challenging you.
Ask a couple people that you trust.
Make sure they know they can keep it real with you and have them tell you, scale them
one to ten.
How do they think you're doing with humility?
What do they think you can do better?
And so I think that what we got to focus on in self-discipline is, and then the eighth
one is, I would challenge you to fill in the blank for yourself.
And there's so many.
But number eight, I want to get your mind not just listening.
I want you to participate with me a little bit of what area right now?
It may be something that I've already went over.
What area do you think you're lacking self-discipline?
Because self-discipline is crucial.
So figure out an area and write it down.
Here's an area right now that I'm lacking self-discipline.
Is it in the way you're eating?
Is it in the way you're sleeping?
Is it in your language?
Is it in your spiritual life?
Mental life?
Physical life?
Is it saving money?
Is it lacking discipline there?
Is it apologizing?
Is it humility?
What areas can you identify?
And then to wrap it up, I'll tell you, here's one of my favorite explanations of discipline.
And it was Nick Sabin and he said it real simple.
He said, discipline is like this.
Is there something that I want to do that I know is not good for me?
Can I get myself to not do it?
There's something that I want to do.
Eat, drink, smoke, do anything.
There's something that I want to do that in the moment may be fun.
Can I get myself to not do it?
That's discipline.
Or there's something that I don't want to do that I know I need to do that's going to
help me.
Can I get myself to do it anyway?
Then I don't feel like it.
I think discipline is most sabotaged by the word feeling or feel.
Here's how I felt I felt like at the time I felt and so discipline is going to require
you to get out of your feelings to start to conquer your feelings.
Your gain control over yourself gain control over your life that's why they call itself
discipline is discipline of yourself that nobody's going to be able to save you until
you make that discipline.
of that decision and when you do, you gain control of your life.
And I'm telling you right now, discipline is sexy.
Discipline is something that will separate you
from everybody, the majority of people around you
do not have self-discipline.
This is an easy way to skip yourself from the back of the line
to the front of the line, top 10%, top 5%,
just by applying discipline to your life.
And I'd like to encourage you today
to start the process right now.
Don't wait for the new year, don't wait for the ball to drop.
Let's get a jump start on this thing
and get some self-discipline rolling in our life.
All right?
Thank you guys for joining us on another episode
of the Grindcast.
