The Power of Contrast
Show notes
Don’t get caught up only looking at people’s highlight reel. Real growth happens in valleys & success is only highlighted at the summit of the mountain. Find someone you admire & then study what they had to go through to get where they are.

Count money, man.
Money, man.
Stacked riches.
I'm trying to told him I'm a beast.
What's up gang?
Welcome back to another episode of The Grindcast.
Get ready.
It's a new day.
And I wanted to share some stuff with you.
You know, I've been seeing some of the Inky Johnson stuff.
I'm sure a lot of you know who he is.
Formerly he was an athlete.
Football player at Tennessee back in the day was a star.
I was going to get drafted and up getting paralyzed.
And man, I just have a lot of connection, you know, with him.
A lot of relatability to some of his story, minus praise the Lord.
You know, I'm not paralyzed.
But just a lot of the way that he thinks, the way that he speaks, has values, some of
the things that he's overcome.
Other than that, I really can relate to him.
So some of the things that I've seen him talking about, I wanted to share with you, you
know, today that I think would add value to people.
And so it's the power of, of, we'll start out with the power of contrast.
And so success is often glamorized.
People only study the highlight reels.
It's what he was talking about, right?
So people only study the highlight reels of a person that, that's successful and that's
dangerous.
It's dangerous to only look at the winds and ignore the struggle.
So what I want you to do is I want you as a winner.
I want you to start taking it a step further, start looking at yourself the rest of this month.
Look at yourself over the next few weeks and anything that you admire in a winner, in
a track athlete, in a body builder, in a fighter, in a boxer, in a grappler, in a CEO,
in a mother, in a husband, in a father, in a business.
Whatever it is that you admire, I want you to make sure that you're not just looking
at that person's highlight reels, looking at their winds, looking at the trophy, looking
at the money, looking at, I want you to please.
Try to go back and find or ask these people, ask these people, give me the struggle.
Give me what did you have to go through?
What things did you have to overcome to get to where you are?
But I think most people just look at the highlight, they look at like, man, look at what this
person got.
Look at this person's body.
Look at what this person won.
Not look at what this person gave up.
Look what this person went through and kept pushing and kept moving forward.
That contrast is understanding both failure and success because that's the difference
maker.
Is your understanding of the relationship between failure and success because what stops
most people from success is failure.
But the only way to great success is through great failure is through failure.
So the growth happens in the valleys, not on the mountain tops, but the people only really
cheer for you and see you at the mountain tops.
But the growth is happening in the valley.
So down in the valley where the green grass grow.
How are you operating in the valley when things ain't going right for you?
That's where the growth is at.
That's where nobody's cheering for you down there.
No one's like, man, that belt looks sweet.
All that you're going to create looks awesome.
In the valley, the valley typically is lonely.
The mountain top everybody wants a piece of it.
Everybody's around you when you're winning, but in the valley.
The life is a roller coaster.
True greatness is forged in the dip.
You can't quit in the dip.
So Enke was talking about that.
He was saying, man, the roller coaster of life is it goes up and it goes down and it goes
up.
What's going to create the life that you want?
What's going to get you to where you want to go is how do you handle that roller coaster
ride when you have a, at the bottom?
So we got to balance the lessons from both the wins and the losses.
Both of those are teachers.
You can learn from your wins and you can learn from your losses.
Obviously, it's more fun to learn from those wins, but you got to learn from both.
Good performers, this is another contrast.
Here it is.
Ready?
The great ones shine when things are easy, but the great ones, the great ones rise when
it's hard.
The good performers, they perform and they shine when it's easy, but the great ones, you
want to know who's going to be great.
You want to know the great ones.
Watch how they rise when things get difficult.
Watch how they handle those difficult moments.
If you're not there yet, this is how we're going to forge you into being that person is
when you're in the valley, stop crying, stop running, stop hiding, stop feeling bad for
yourself, stop the poor knees and become a warrior.
That's this is where the growth is at.
There's only so much we can avoid.
Don't avoid failure, embrace it, study it, use it, but we can't always avoid it in order
to grow.
The gap between good and great is bigger than people think.
The gap between good and great is bigger than people think.
Good crumbles under pressure.
Great is built for adversity, which one are you?
Good crumbles under pressure, those that are great, that's when they're at their best during
a little bit of adversity.
And so if you have a little bit of adversity in your life right now, start to use that
as the training grounds and breeding grounds for the next level for you.
The difference in greatness in good and great oftentimes is preparation.
How are you preparing?
Do you prepare like the greats or do you prepare like the goods?
Are you prepared like the averages?
Preparation is a big difference maker.
Perspective is a big difference maker.
How do you view this?
Obstacle.
How do you view this setback?
How do you view this?
Can the perspective be this is going to make me better?
I'm trusting in God.
This is going to work out in my favor.
This is going to grow me.
I'm going to control the things that I can control and I'm going to let go of the things
that I cannot control.
All of those which are not good for me, I'm going to let those things go and I'm only
going to embrace the mindset of a champion.
My perspective is going to be somebody out there has overcome worse.
And if I can latch on to a person or somebody that has overcome other odds, overcoming
overcame a bigger mountain, overcame a bigger obstacle.
I'm going to latch on to that and I'm going to use that as motivation because that's
your perspective.
Your perspective is how you view things.
How you see things.
How you feel about things.
And if you could form a winning perspective about sometimes the losing moments, that's
going to be a difference maker for you.
And then persistence beats resistance.
You got to have persistence.
That's a difference maker.
What is persistence?
It's how you persist when things resist.
It's how do you overcome hurdles and obstacles, the setbacks and failures and haters and
people that kick you when you're down and people that talk to you in life's unfair things
that come your way.
Do you have that persistence muscle?
That I'm going to go through this.
I'm going to go around this.
I'm going to go over this.
I'm going to go.
But what I do know as that we will persevere.
We will persist.
Those winners, those champions, those are the people that are built on the other side
of don't hear me.
Champions are built on the other side of don't.
When you push through with other people avoid.
I don't want to do this.
We don't want to do that.
When other people don't do, that's what separates you as a winner.
They don't work weekends.
That's how you're going to beat them.
They don't work evenings.
That's how you're going to beat them.
Find the areas that most people don't do.
And that's going to be the area that you could take yourself to the next level end.
Because winners and losers both got similar goals.
This is where the hate comes in.
This is where people start hating and getting frustrated because the winners and the losers
got the same goals.
The difference is how far are they willing to go?
How much stuff are they willing to take and keep moving forward?
How many things are they willing to sacrifice?
The good people that want to be good, they show up when it's convenient.
The great ones show up no matter what.
The great ones show up, man, I ain't really feeling that great today.
My ankle, they don't feel that great today.
Man, I got some adversity going on in my life, just show up anyway.
I don't feel like going right, I show up anyway.
The great ones, they just show up anyway.
The good ones show up when they feel like it.
The good ones show up when it's convenient.
The champions, the great ones, the champions do every day.
You heard this before.
The champions do every day what other people do occasionally.
Do you occasionally eat clean?
Do you occasionally work hard?
Do you occasionally make those calls?
Do you occasionally have a positive mindset?
Do you occasionally work the way that you're supposed to work?
The champions, they do them all the time.
So to do those things all the time, you gotta be a brother, you gotta be a sister, you
gotta get real close with discipline and consistency because discipline and consistency
are the separators.
One is, I'm doing something that I don't want to do.
Or man, I really want to do that.
I really want to eat that.
I really want to go there.
I really want to take this time off.
I really want to do that, but I'm not because I'm going to apply discipline to the situation.
Discipline and consistency.
Not occasionally, I'm doing it every day.
I'm doing it every week.
I'm showing up consistent.
I'm just consistent in the process.
You can only be consistent if you learn to control your emotions.
Otherwise you're going to be demotivated because you can't be consistent because you didn't
have the result that you wanted last week, yesterday, last fight, whatever it is.
So now that means you're committed to the result, not the process.
You just got to be committed and be consistent to the process.
And so what you're going to do when nobody else is watching is going to determine your
outcome.
When we break the Huttle today, as we break the Huttle today and you decide, do I want to be
a champion?
Do I want to be great?
Or do I want to be good?
Or do I want to be average?
Well, let's focus on what are you going to do when nobody's watching you?
Because those things that you do when nobody's watching you, no one's encouraging you, no
one's pushing you, no one's forcing you, that's what's going to dictate, that's what's
going to define your outcome.
You got it in you.
We got it in us.
You got to remind yourself, we got to remind ourselves, either way there's going to be
pain.
We cannot escape pain in this life.
Arnold said it, right?
No pain, no gain.
We're either going to have the pain of discipline or the pain of disappointment, the pain of
not having the discipline.
What I've learned is the things that it takes to win are painful in life.
Discipline is painful, sucks, the sacrifices you got to make, whatever it is, but it provides
you more comfort down the road.
It's a lot easier and better with better outcomes than the latter, the latter being, man,
I'm going to choose comfort right now, not be consistent, not be disciplined, so then
I'm going to be super disappointed down the road.
That disappointment, to me, is so much worse than the pain of that discipline to not have
that feeling, to not have that outcome, to not have that emotion all the time.
Let's apply discipline, let's apply consistency, let's be persistent, let's separate ourselves
from good and let's go ahead and go to greatness.
We appreciate you as always.
You could have spent this 15 minutes doing anything else with anybody else and you chose
to invest it and spending some time with us on the grindcast.
We want you to know that we genuinely appreciate that and we hope that we've had an opportunity
to make an impact in your life today.
If so, would you mind taking a moment out and sharing it for us with other...
people that we can impact or share it on your story or whatever it is, just share
the message. That's the only cost to entry to this deal is if you get impacted, don't
let it stop with you. Okay, we gotta go ahead and we gotta go ahead and let it pass through
you onto other people. So we're looking forward to continuing to try to make a difference
in your life. As always, we appreciate you joining us on another episode of the Grand
Cast Get Ready. It's a new day. We'll talk to you next week. Let's go.
