Same Goal Different Habits
Show notes
The habits you form will either make you or break you. Anybody can set a goal and most people can work towards that goal when everything is going well and they “feel like it.” But what happens when life punches you in the face? This is where having habits of discipline starts to separate people!

Count money, man.
Money, man.
That grits us.
I'm trying to told him I'm a beast.
What's up gang?
Welcome to another episode of The Grindcast.
Get ready.
It's a new day.
And oftentimes in life, two people have the same goal, but different habits.
And that's what separates people.
Everybody has a plan until you get punched in the face.
A lot of people got credit for that quote, but I think Mike Tyson gets a lot of credit
for that one.
So we'll give it to Iron Mike every, everyone has a plan until you get punched in the face.
And what I mean by punched in the face is life is going to punch us all in the face.
Rich poor, big little, no matter democratic, Republican, don't matter.
Everybody is going to get punched in the face.
Many obstacles building your dream takes longer than people think.
And it usually takes more effort and sacrifice than people budget for and think also.
And so there's all these things that happen on your journey to success.
And it's really a roller coaster ride.
And I used to tell people our business is bipolar.
You can't let it make you bipolar, which means you got to find a way to learn to stay even
keel because things go up and things go down.
The housing market goes up.
The housing market eventually comes down a little bit.
The stock market goes up eventually the stock market comes down.
It's business, but your journey and business and life and whatever you're on can continue
to go up over the long haul, but over a short haul.
It's a dip.
So if you're looking at a graph, a 20 year graph, you'll look at it over time.
And it goes up.
But if you take just a specific moment that may catch you in the down, but that down is
now higher than your down of 10 years ago.
You understand what I'm saying?
And like, I got people in my business now that they're used to making a million dollars
that if they make a half a million dollars, that would be a down.
That would be things would change in their life.
They wouldn't be happy with what's going on.
They'd be upset with work.
I'm not saying they wouldn't be happy in their life, but they wouldn't be happy with the
way things are going.
It may be five years before that that would have been their dream.
So what happens is over time, your lows, oftentimes are really your old highs as you continue
to climb.
But you forget that in the moment because all you know is that you're in a current low.
But over the long haul, it scales up.
So think about it right now.
If like man, you're in a low point.
If you compare it to 10 years ago, is it low for you?
Are you doing better?
If you compare it to five years ago, are you doing better right now than five years ago?
Is it really a low or is it just a moment?
Is it just the season?
Did life punch you in the face for the moment?
Because alarm clocks go off and you ain't going to want to get up sometimes when you just
got punched in the face in life is rocking you.
You may be in.
If you're not where you need to be or want to be, and there's levels to it, you're never
really where you need to be or want to be.
But like in the beginning phases, you know, I tell people, you know, I grind now people,
you know, they see my work ethic, you know, I'm up early and I travel a lot and all
that.
I'm in my efforts to my peers in my position and stuff.
I think people think I'm a 10, but I really rank myself a nine for work ethic right now.
Why?
Well, because I'm married, I got kids, I got youth programs, I got other things, Jiu Jitsu
that take my time, energy, effort, focus.
And I could tell you building this business for at least a period of five years, whatever
the scale was, I was that 10, 20, 100, whatever it was maxed out, not worried about nut
knels, nobody else, nut knel just going all in on building.
And I think people underestimate the process to build something and get something off the
ground.
Like, if you're really trying to get something off the ground, like I got, I got young
friends of mine that are in the process of chasing their dream as fighters.
Good ones.
They ain't distracted.
They ain't dealing with youth programs.
Ain't got a bunch of kids that they're trying to deal with all the time.
They are moving to wherever the fight is at.
If they got to move to Mexico, they'll move.
If they got to move to Vegas, Florida, wherever they got to go to get themself better to make
it, they're going there.
People sacrifice all gas pedal don't matter.
Like when you are building something and building your dream, you have to go all in.
People are going to invite you to parties, but you need to go to work.
Anybody can set goals and go after a better life, but few people have the discipline to stick
to it and make the sacrifices.
What does it mean to make a sacrifice, to make a trade off, that I'm going to not party
as much now so I can party more down the road.
That I'm not going to spend as much money now so I can have more money to spend down the
road.
It's trade offs.
In the minute that you stop making sacrifices and trade offs, is the minute that you can't
rise anymore because there is no such thing as getting something for nothing.
In the beginning, you might have to trade time for money.
You have to work until you got it.
Down the road, there's still got to be a trade off, but you might have to just trade off
the money to have more time.
You hire more people or you give up more money in order to create more time for yourself.
Either way, you got to pay and you got to sacrifice.
It's all about the habits that you make.
The habits that you form will make you.
They'll make or break you.
The habits that we need, the habits that make you successful are the ones that allow
you to make the hard, right decisions instead of the easy, wrong decisions.
The ones we quote feel like doing or want to do are not always the right decisions.
The things that we need to go through in order to get to the next level usually are hard
and not always fun.
It takes discipline over our feelings and it takes habits over our temporary happiness.
Who told you that you were supposed to be happy in the process as bullshit?
You're not going to be happy at every moment of building.
You're not going to be happy every moment of your marriage.
I got news for you could be happily married and not happy in every moment or every month
or every week or every day or every year.
At some point in the process, you ain't going to be happy.
I was listening to Pastor T.D. Jake's preach one time and I heard him say people saying
that they're not happy.
He said, who told you you were supposed to be happy?
Who told you you were going to get married and be happy?
Who told you you were going to chase your dream and automatically always be happy?
Who told you you were going to build something worth building and you were always going
to be happy?
You're not happy often times because you're setting unrealistic expectations for things
because you don't understand what it costs and what it requires.
You have to say I want average because I'm only willing to put average out there so
I can be happy.
Or you say I understand there's some sweet treats, times, parties, things I got to forego
which would make me happier temporarily that I'm going to give up for five years from
today to wake up every day and be happy and live a life occasion.
I don't need to go on vacation.
My life is a vacation.
Every day is a vacation.
But it starts only by what you're willing to give up in the habits that you form.
But what is missed is the long term happiness that comes from the right habits done day
in and day out over time.
The habits it takes day in and day out to get to where you want to be may not always be
what you want.
That's why it requires discipline, suffering, pain of discipline or the pain of disappointment.
The way there's going to be pain, pain of discipline, pain of regret.
Don't want to put in the discipline either way you got to pay.
So what you paid for by lack of discipline is you paid for regret.
What you paid for a lack of wanting to work and put the work in upfront you paid for
on the back end with needing to still work or whatever it is.
There's no way out of it.
And I'm telling you the cheapest price, the cheapest price, the cheapest price to pay
in the process is usually always today.
You know, the market goes up and down, things go up and down.
But over the long haul, if you buy it now and you sell it in 40 years, it'll be worth
way more.
But the process, paying the price in the process usually every year, there's major inflation
and the cost goes up tremendously.
I'll do it next time.
I'll do it next year.
Someday I'm going to do it.
No, no, it starts with today.
It's not going to be someday.
And you can't preface.
You got to keep it real with yourself and the habits that you're currently putting in
your life.
What are your habits or your habits in place right now, getting you to do the things that
you should do, or are they not?
Are they weak habits?
Because you can't think that just because you say I'm not going to lie, that it erases
the things that you're not supposed to be doing.
So if somebody asks you, hey, you've been working as hard as you can, I'm not going to lie.
I probably could work a little bit harder, but that doesn't make it any better.
I'm not going to lie.
I haven't been putting in the work.
I'm not going to lie.
I haven't been as focused.
I'm not going to lie.
I haven't been as disciplined.
I'm not going to lie.
Well, you get what you pay for.
But I'm telling you, the pain of discipline, the habits of discipline tastes better in
the long term and over time, the habits that it takes to be your very best self are painful.
You're not going to be understood.
People are going to tell you they're unnecessary, the things that you're doing.
Only if you're on a road to greatness because you had to skip that wedding, you had to skip
that party, you had to skip that dinner, you had to skip that lunch, you had to not go on
that vacation, you had to do, you had to not talk to that person, you had to do whatever
is not normal because you're going all-in forming habits of all-in to go to where you need
to go.
People are not always going to agree with your stance on things, but they're not going
to pay your bills five years from today either.
And so I just want to encourage you out there to put the habits in your life.
They're like bumpers.
You got to put habits in your life that align with your vision to where you want to be.
The price that you got to pay has to be equal to the life that you want to live.
So if you're like, man, I got big dreams, I want to do big things.
I got big goals.
I want big visions.
If you got big things, be ready.
You got to give up big sacrifices.
Period point blank.
Everybody that's telling you otherwise is selling you something.
They're benefiting and profiting probably off of your mediocrity.
But to go to the next level, you got to go all-in.
You got to put the habits in place.
You got to do the stuff that's not fun temporarily.
You got to make the sacrifices that aren't fun temporarily.
And then down the road, you'll think yourself when you see the view at the top.
But at the top, you don't take everything with you.
If you're climbing a mountain, you're not packing 15 suitcases.
You're not bringing your dumbbells, your car, your PlayStation.
You're not putting everything that you own.
Everybody in that bag, you're going to the top of the mountain with only the necessities,
water, some food, some things that keep you alive.
And people ain't going to understand that.
When you're on the climb, you got to let some people go that are pulling you down.
You got to let some weight off of the cl-
of these people telling you, you gotta be at this party,
you gotta be at this event, you gotta do this,
you gotta do that, you gotta do this, you gotta do that.
Things got to be let go of on the climb
and not everybody's gonna understand.
But you can come back and take some people up that mountain
and they're gonna have to climb just like you climb
or the benefit of you climbing that mountain
is gonna rain on a lot of other people once you make it.
So I just wanna encourage you to keep climbing,
make the hard decisions, put the discipline,
put the structure, put the habits in your life
that align with your vision and your goals
and go after it day by day, take it one day at a time.
All you can control us today, don't worry about yesterday,
