Simon Arias here.
Get ready to do that.
What's up, gang?
Welcome to the grind, Cass.
Simon Arias here.
Want to introduce myself real quick.
35-year-old, entrepreneur, went from welfare to millionaire by 26 years old.
Atheist to believer.
All this person on the football field to the captain of the high school football team,
where we win a state championship, four-year starter in college, is amazing what's possible
with discipline.
See what discipline means to me is doing what you need to do regardless of the way
that you feel.
But that's what, to me, discipline is knowing what you need to do, then executing what you
need to do when it needs to happen, regardless of the emotion that's going on inside you.
So you'll see people, I don't like that.
I don't, this food doesn't taste as good to me.
So I can't stick to eating that.
I don't want to wake up.
I'm not a quote, morning person.
All of these things are feelings and emotions that you need to get away from because discipline
is doing, you wouldn't need discipline if everything was smooth and perfect.
You only need discipline when you don't want to do something that's going to take you
to the next level.
And so when I think about where did this discipline come personally for me, I believe it all started
from being undersized.
And I've carried that undersized out into business, keeping that same chip on my shoulder.
So when you're undersized playing sports, I play basketball, football, baseball, every
one of them I remember excelling it.
Specifically, I chose football to be my route.
That's what I ended up falling in love with.
So I'm five foot seven in high school, 165 pounds in Youngstown.
I'll go to a school, Youngstown, Ursula.
At the time, 90s, 2,080s, even powerhouse high school football, powerhouse football in
the area.
Everybody telling me you shouldn't go there, you're not going to play.
There's no way you're going to get on the field at your size, not at Ursula.
Maybe go to one of these other schools.
My sophomore year, a letter in play, our teams of powerhouse junior year start, senior year
start, captain.
We end up going to the state championship.
We go 14 and one in winning state championship.
Move on to college.
Same exact thing.
Small, undersized.
Red shirt my first year, four year starter.
I don't say any of this stuff to brag or to boast.
I'm telling you that if I could go at five foot seven, 165, then 185 pounds and start strong
safety in high school and college and be the captain of the team.
You imagine what you could do when you're willing to put your mind and discipline to
something.
When I say discipline, I learn the discipline in this respect because I would have to make
four plays to everybody else's one play.
I would have to be in the weight room earlier than everybody else and stay longer than everybody
else.
I would have to know the plays in the playbook better than everybody else.
I would have to do everything more.
I couldn't miss a practice or I would lose ground.
I would have no chance.
I couldn't miss certain things, workouts or I wouldn't gain any ground.
I would have no shot.
I would have no chance because I had to do so much more to beat out the person in front of
me that had the size that looked like they were department.
Maybe didn't have that dog inside.
What I'm telling you is it transferred over into business, keeping that mentality that
I won't be outworked.
You have to take this mentality of you may not be as talented as somebody else.
You may not be, your parents maybe didn't go to send you to the best schools.
Maybe you didn't get the best grades.
Maybe you don't have the education or the perfect burbage in business as somebody else.
Do you know what you can control outwork in everybody else with discipline?
When these people don't do something, that's where you get an edge.
When you both don't feel like going to work because it's cold outside, that's where you
get an edge.
When they don't want to drive into snow, that's when you get an edge.
Discipline to me is the glue that connects what you see and want to what actually happens.
The only thing that'll connect what actually is going to happen from what you want is that
word discipline because somewhere in the process of getting what you want, there is a
ton of things that you need to do that you don't want to do in that process that are
going to determine if you're going to be a failure or be a success.
If you're going to win or if you're going to lose, the good news is talent to me is overrated.
Some of the people that I've learned that I've been around in both sports and business
that have done the best weren't always the most talented people, but they were typically
the people that had the most discipline and the best work ethic.
Something that stands out to me, there was a quote by it's actually in my business,
in my main office here in Pittsburgh, I have a matted wrestling in Jiu-Jitsu and boxing
room upstairs, which was always a dream of mine since I started training martial arts.
I've been doing martial arts in mostly Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu now for nine years actually privileged
and blessed to receive my brown belt in that.
I try to make sure that I'm training three, four days a week either boxing or Jiu-Jitsu.
In my mat room, I have a quote by Muhammad Ali, who some would call one of the best
boxers of all time.
And that quote says, I hated every minute of training, but I said don't quit, suffer now
and live the rest of your life like a champion.
That's on my wall.
And I love it so much because I think people see that quote and they don't think about
what he's saying.
Ali said, I hated every minute of training.
So think about it.
That means he didn't like everything about the process but something in his discipline,
some discipline that he had was bigger than what he liked or felt like doing.
He said he hated every minute of training.
But in his mind, he said, but in my, but I said don't quit.
So that means he told himself in his mind don't quit.
Next word is huge, suffer now, suffer, suffer.
I mean, when you're thinking of how can I describe pain, I think the worst word you
can use is suffer, sufferings a whole, another, another level.
He said, I said don't quit, suffer now and live the rest of your life like a champion.
And I think that what he's saying is just be disciplined that you're going to have to
do some things in the process that you don't feel like doing in order to live the rest
of your life like a champion.
When I start to look at life and think about, you know, people that live a disciplined
life and people that live an undisciplined life.
Typically the people that live an undisciplined life, those are the people you start to, you feel
bad for them at first and then you start thinking, you know what, they deserve it because
sometimes these people can have every opportunity and they have so much talent, but they can't
get out of their own way.
They just can't do the basic things and they keep shooting themselves in the foot and it's
a lack of discipline.
Like disciplined people, they'll write things down, they'll write a plan down and then
they'll execute it to the tee.
Undisciplined people will write a plan down and then find excuses as to why they couldn't
execute those things when they don't feel like doing them.
Disciplined people do what they say that they're going to do.
Like if you're disciplined and you say, oh, starting in January, I'm doing cardio,
three days a week and I'm not eating junk Monday through Friday.
Disciplined people will eat the right food, stick with it, stay disciplined, do the exercise,
stick in the gym and then the undisciplined people start to make excuses because they don't
feel like it.
They'll start a diet and not finish the diet.
Disciplined people will say, I'm getting up at six o'clock.
In the morning or five o'clock in the morning, they'll set an alarm clock and get up.
Undisciplined people will, I hit snooze three, four times.
I don't know what happened.
How about my alarm clock didn't go off?
I mean, if I had a dollar for every time somebody told me their alarm clock didn't go off.
The thing about discipline and non-discipline and I can go on forever is discipline decisions
are taking your emotions out of it and how you feel and just executing.
Doing what needs to happen, it's going to benefit you.
Whether it's the food and nutrition, you put in your body that's going to benefit your
life down the road and your health or doing the right things in business or in your marriage
with discipline that's not easy.
That's going to take you where you want to be three years from today.
Discipline emotional.
What's best right now?
What makes me feel best right now?
Oh, it would taste better for me to eat this junk food right now.
I'm in Las Vegas on a business trip.
My wife's not here.
Maybe we're not getting along.
Man, it would feel really good right now to entertain another girl for a couple hours.
That's it's a lack of discipline.
You start to think short term in emotional versus what needs to happen.
That would you feel like doing that's losing mentality.
When I look at some of the people that have the talent to be great, whether it's the football
field or in business, whatever it is, the people that had it and lose and don't do it,
it's discipline.
They can't help themselves.
They keep staying out late at night at the club when they're supposed to be going to
sleep, going to work.
They can't.
It's the discipline because they're making emotional decisions based off how they feel.
Not what needs to happen.
So today, you know, I think about how discipline, how it's meant so much to me in my business.
And we're in the insurance business as one of the businesses that I own.
I've had the pleasure to open up multiple businesses from there, a real estate company,
a recruiting company, a consulting company that has the opportunity to consult for multi-millionaires.
I mean, I would never have thought for a moment as a 2.5 GPA student in high school.
My goal was just to get a 2.5 and an 18 on the ACT.
So I was good enough to get a scholarship and play football at the next level.
Never at that moment did I ever think that I would have millionaires paying me to give
them advice.
Never did I think that I would have a multi-million dollar real estate company with over 40 different
rental properties in flipping homes or rehabilitating homes and selling them at 16, 17 years old.
My dream was to work at general motors in the union outside of Youngstown, Ohio.
Those are the only people I ever saw making any money.
So I never thought in a million years that I would be able to own all these companies.
So you know what the number one thing is that I could think of that made it happen?
Discipline.
Today, from the time I wake up, I start off with discipline.
First, mind, body, spirit.
Mentally, physically, spiritually.
Pouring into myself so I can serve and help everybody else.
Discipline to read scripture every day and throw a prayer up.
Discipline to eat the right foods.
Drink a drink, vegetable juice, five days out of seven days a week.
That's not what I feel like doing.
This morning, I met with Jim Truss, or I had to be in Youngstown at seven o'clock.
I woke up at 4.30 and worked out first to get my body spirit done
before I got on the road.
All that stuff carries me with discipline.
Discipline with my schedule.
Writing things down, looking two days in advance, three days in advance,
forward.
So I don't get disorganized.
All that stuff takes discipline.
Discipline to prioritize on Sunday,
planning the whole week out in advance, starting with my own family,
starting with when I'm going to go on date night with my wife.
When are we going to church?
What are we doing with the family?
Plugging all of those things in.
See, most people in this situation I've learned, they'll make excuses
as to why they don't have time with their family or why they don't do this.
What I've learned is it's just a lack of discipline.
We have 168 hours in a week.
If you sleep for 50, you got 118 left.
If you work for 70, you still got 48 hours left.
It's how you spend those with discipline that will make or break the rest of your life.
And even being on top,
I look at people that are having, you know, and I can't judge.
Now I told my wife, you know, she's more
keep it to yourself, introverted, I'm more outspoken.
You know, we've had in the past, we've had rough issues.
10 years we've been together, Mary going on five.
We've had some real dark points in our relationship.
Fast forward to today.
were like honeymoon, high school, in love,
perfect, moving with three kids,
hasn't always been that way.
So I look, well, what some of these things
took discipline on her and it on Mayan,
I could think on Mayan as a man
and I try to help other men with this
just discipline to be loyal
when things ain't going your way.
Discipline in your relationships.
To do what's right and it's gonna serve
your marriage five years from today,
10 years from today,
discipline and everything that you do.
In success as a bad teacher,
John Maxwell always says,
you cannot get to the top on accident,
but you could fall off on accident,
if you don't pay attention.
On top, I can tell you right now,
discipline, I'm up, out grinding,
working, putting in the time,
putting in the effort right now to stay on top.
This is when you need to discipline the most.
When you start to win games,
when things start to go your way in life,
this is when you start to kick in the discipline the most.
I think about Kobe Bryant,
this video I saw on Kobe Bryant,
and it's been going around a little bit
on the internet and social media.
I don't know if you've seen it,
if not, I think it's called the Mamba mentality.
And so, by seven, eight years old,
nine years old, you start to see what kids
if they're playing baseball, basketball, football,
which kids are good in standing out.
You could tell if your son is an athletic by then.
I would think, Kobe talks about 10 years old,
he was in a summer basketball league
and didn't score one point.
Played the whole time but didn't score one point,
the entire summer basketball league.
So he started to put discipline,
he starts talking, it didn't say specifically this,
but I pulled out of it,
discipline in the process of saying,
all right, this year I'm gonna work on creating
my own shot off the dribble, he says.
All year, I'm gonna,
I'm gonna, when they go to lunch,
when I'm at camp and they go to lunch,
I'm gonna come outside and I'm gonna keep practicing.
I'm gonna keep playing.
And so he talks about the following year,
he starts to score some points.
The year after that, he's one of the best players.
By four years by the time he's 14 years old,
he's the best player in the state.
How do you go from the best player?
How do you go from not scoring a point at 10
to the best player in the state at 14,
discipline in the process?
See it's easy to see where a person is at
when they already win an NBA championship.
It's easy to see where a person's at
in their marriage 30 years down the road.
It's easy to see where a business is at 15 years
growing in the business.
What you don't see is the discipline that got applied
when people didn't feel like doing it,
that got them to where they are.
Discipline in that process.
Not everybody is born with some specific thing
that they were just sometimes that happens.
I was never smart enough or I was never the person
to come up with an idea.
I'm gonna invent a microphone.
I'm gonna invent, I wasn't inventing nothing,
but let me tell you what I could invent.
I could invent the grind.
I can invent the discipline to be the first person in
in the last person to leave and I don't work everybody else.
So when I want you guys to take in and take home this week,
as I want you to see areas of your life
that you can apply discipline to,
what are those things that you've been telling yourself
you need to do that you know is gonna move you
in the right directions, right those things down.
There's power when you write things down
and look at them every day.
What are those things that you need that you've been
going with your emotions and feelings
that you don't feel like getting up?
You don't feel like eating that.
You don't feel like saying I'm sorry.
You don't feel like doing this.
What are the things that you've not been doing
because of feelings and emotion
that you need to apply some discipline in your life
to take yourself to the next level
and let's go out there and do that this week.
And when you start to do things like that,
you'll realize how much of this world is separated
by just work ethic and discipline consistently.
Thanks for joining us on our first podcast
our first grind cast looking forward to spending some time
with you guys in a years to come, let's get it.
We help money, man, money, that gritches.
I'm trying to told him, I'm a beast, but...
