Consistency
Show notes
If you’ve been listening, you’ve definitely heard me say it, “The test of greatness & the hallmark of excellence is consistency.” I actually got that quote from my mentor, Jim Tressel and I have yet to see a scenario where it doesn’t hold true. Genuine greatness only comes from consistency.

Count money, man.
Money, man.
That gritch is fine.
I told him, I'm a beast.
What's up, gang?
Welcome back to another episode of The Grindcast.
Get ready.
It's a new day.
And we're going to talk about the test of greatness in the hallmark of excellence.
Those of you that are around me all the time probably hear me say this so much, you probably
ready to not even listen to this message anymore.
The test of greatness in the hallmark of excellence is consistency.
We could be great one minute and not great the next.
That's the stuff that slows us down.
That's the stuff that stops us.
That's the stuff that separates us.
So, I was talking to a group of up and coming leaders in our organization and I'm looking
at them and I'm saying, look, I'm aware that right now you're probably in three different
groups and so I'm talking to people that are feeling three different ways.
Right?
So you got one group.
You know you're having more success and having more fun and making more money than you
ever thought in your life and you're thinking, man, praise the Lord.
Thank God.
Then there's a group on the other side that are thinking, man, I didn't come here for this.
I ain't having no success.
I'm making less money than I wanted to make.
I'm struggling.
I'm struggling with what to do.
Lord help me.
Then there's a group in the middle and you're thinking, man, I ain't making all the money
that I want to make in the world or having all the success I want to make but I'm doing
I ain't doing pretty good.
It could be worse.
Those are paid.
I'm doing straight doing I want to take it to the next level.
And so I start talking to those three.
So the top group I said, now the test for you is, how great do you want to be?
Because you were great for one month, shows what you're capable of.
So where do you want to be 12 months from today, 11 months from today?
You got to have consistency and a lot of you are so short thinking, short-sighted and
I'm going to talk about money just because it's going to coincide with effort but just
don't worry about the money but I'm going to use money as the example.
I said look, you may have made 50,000 this month or 30,000 this month or whatever it is
and your bills may be low.
You may be younger.
You may have bills that are low whatever and you may be thinking, man, my bills are paid
now with this one month for the rest of the year.
Why don't I just enjoy myself?
I don't need to work.
I don't need to do this.
I don't need to do that.
Why would I, it's hard to be motivated because all my bills are already paid and I said,
man, that's short term thinking.
You got an opportunity to be great.
If in one month you took care of what you needed in a year, what if you went hard for
a year, couldn't you take care of what you needed for the next 10 years?
So can you look five years in advance or 10 years in advance and say I want to pay the
price right now for what I could have five years down the road, 10 years down the road because
if you go out right now and buy a car and you get a car note on it, most of the time it's
a 60 month car payment, you got five years.
You're going to be paying on that thing.
By the time your car is paid, you're 25, you're going to be 30 years old, my friend.
So you can look 10 years in advance and say, man, I might be married.
I might be a mother.
I might be a father.
And start looking and saying, do I want my husband to have to work?
Do I want my wife to have to work?
How much is the house going to be?
How much is the down payment?
How much is the furniture?
How much is the ring?
How much is the wedding?
How much is the school?
How much are the lessons?
And really look at what life is going to cost you to live life on your own terms.
And now how far you think that 50,000 you just made is about to go, bro.
That might not even bother ring.
That might not take care of the wedding.
That might not take care of the school for your kids for three, four years at private
school or whatever it is that you want to do.
So if that's really your vision, do you think it's
better to wait until that happens or do you think is better to get it done right now?
Some of you that are in the great category right now, you got an opportunity to go for
the throat and be great and build a life for yourself.
But I watch so many people take a step back because they're thinking short term and they're
not thinking long term and I want to challenge you to take it to the next level and to be consistent
if you did it last month, do it this month.
You do it this month, do it next month.
Somebody that's great at anything they'll tell you, it's a lifestyle, my friend.
You want to be a good basketball player, football player.
You can't just be great in the season.
You got to be great in the off season.
It don't turn off.
And if it turns off, it's just for a moment.
It's just for a day.
It's just for a week.
It's just for a moment.
But 90% of the time, that switches turned up, turned on.
You a pro fighter, it's a lifestyle.
You a pro football player, it's a lifestyle.
You a pro business person, it's a lifestyle.
You're a professional mother.
It's a lifestyle.
Shit, don't stop.
It's 24, 7, 365.
To be great.
I'm with parents that got kids, teenagers, kids are getting it.
It's like, my sorry, I got to take, we're on vacation, Saturday, they're taking calls.
Fridays are worried about their kids.
Thursdays are worried about their kids.
Don't matter.
Being a mom full-time job, being a parent full-time job, it's a lifestyle for the rest of your
life.
Once a parent, always a parent, always going to worry.
It is what it's a lifestyle.
It ain't a beginning and an end.
It's just, this is what we do.
This is what we become.
And so pick a pace that you could work right now based off of what your life, where you're
at right now, and say, this is the pace I'm going to run, but whatever pace you run,
run that with consistency, please.
To be great.
You can't water a plant for a month and not water the next month, think it's going to survive.
You can't treat your husband good one month, treat your husband like shit the next month,
think it's going to survive.
You can't be a good parent one month, be a bad parent the next month, think the kids
going to be raised great.
Can't be in the fitness and work hard for one month and eat like crap for a whole
another month, think you're going to be hitting your fitness goals.
Where in life did you, like, what are you reading and seeing and thinking that people are
making you think that you can just work hard for a minute and then stop working, and that's
all baloney to hustle you.
Anybody that's telling you that you can get six minute abs is full of shit.
Anybody that's telling you that you can have this easy life by doing easy things is full
of shit.
The better things you want, the more sacrifices you're going to take.
Look at life, everything in life, the things you love, the people you love you sacrifice
for.
What gave is only begotten son.
What a sacrifice giving your son, giving your life to get more.
It's what it's to gain.
You got to give up to go up.
Then there's the middle level and I'm telling these folks, now you messed up.
You already show what you're capable of because if you're in the middle level, you show,
if you're good enough to do that, you're good enough to go to the next level.
The only thing that stands in your way is the same thing that stands in these people's
way right now that can slide backwards from where they're at and that's being freaking
consistent with your attitude, with your effort, with your coachability, with your work ethic,
consistency, not being lazy, being real with yourself, taking steps forward.
Then I talked to the lower level group that ain't where they want to be and I said, look,
let's look at your skill set, your coachability, and your work ethic.
If you're not where you want to be, you're in the third group that's not where they want
to be, we're talking about being consistent in the beginning, you're not getting the results.
Then I want you to look at first off my skill set.
I was talking to people about sales.
You could talk to yourself about baseball, bowling, boxing, beauty pageants, anything
would it be anything that you want, it's all going to apply, I'm going to talk, like
I was talking to people in sales.
So I said, look, if you don't know your presentation to where you would watch that recording and
watch your presentation, you're like, I would give myself an A. How could you expect
to make the money that the people in this group made if you didn't even get your presentation
down?
You don't know the answers to your objections to your clients' questions perfectly.
You're waiting, you can't wait for somebody to spoon food you all the time, feed you the
food all the time like a baby.
If your manager or your leader don't cook the food for you, heat it up into microwave,
put it in a spoon, pop it in your mouth, give you a napkin, make sure your food's
not gested, ask if you need anything else.
If somebody's not tendin' to your beck and call all the time like a baby, then you're
not going to be successful.
You can't, if you got somebody like that, God bless them.
But people that are busy building a business or building people, they can only, sometimes
they can only give you an hour.
It's like somebody that were to meal prep with you, they make a meal prep plan.
How long would it take them to draw out?
Here's what you eat seven days a week, less than an hour.
But the other 167 hours this week, the problem is you got to execute what's on the paper.
I could draw you up an exercise plan, you got to exercise.
Kobe Bryant, Seth Curry could tell you, they shot 500 shots a day.
I'm sure their coach wasn't forcing them and watching them and begging them and like,
there's probably a bunch of times where you wasn't with me when I was shooting into
gym by myself four o'clock, five o'clock, six o'clock in the morning, free throws, three
point, whatever it is.
So you got to get the meal plan from a leader and put the work into your own craft and
to your own skill set until you could say, I'm good because I worked on it myself.
You're waiting for everybody to spoon feed you, develop your skill set, your skill set.
Then I said, you got to be coachable.
Have the problem with the people in that group, they don't listen.
They don't want to be coachable.
You got to listen to what your coach wants you to do and listen to what they're telling
you to do.
And if the time to be coachable is not when it's what you agree with and what you want
to do, you don't need a coach for that.
You need a coach for the things and times of stuff you don't want to do.
That's why people hire personal trainers to get them to do stuff they don't want to
do.
Perse trainer says, hey man, here's what you got to do Monday, Wednesday, Friday, eat pizza,
Tuesday, Thursday, eat ice cream, Saturday, eat chicken, Sunday, eat cake.
You wouldn't need too much help.
It's fun.
It's easy.
You need help when it's stuff you don't want to frickin' do, but guess where the growth
is at?
So ask yourself, am I being coachable, 100% coachable, even in the things that I don't want
to do, you got to apply discipline there.
And the last one is work ethic.
All these three things are like control by the person.
And so work ethic on a scale of one to 10, how hard are you working consistently?
How many calls are you making?
That's on you.
If another person's making 1500 calls and you're making 700 calls, what's the excuse?
Like I don't understand.
If they could do it, you could do it.
What are their fingers faster than you?
This isn't a 40 yard dash.
You could be overweight and you should be able to dial at the same speed that somebody else
could dial.
Now they got things that you could use and whatever it is.
I don't know the technology, but whatever figured out.
But work ethic, you got to bring top-notch work ethic if you want top-notch results.
So in that group, that's what I would tell you.
And so I just want to encourage you out there to build upon, we're in 2024, don't be in
2025 with the wood of Kudasheh, the wood of Wish I Wish I Wither, wood of Wood of
Kudasheh.
Let's let's let's be January 2025 saying job well done always can find things to improve on this year
I would give an A in my area of the things that I can freaking control and let's be consistent
2024 let's go
Bring it let's be consistent
If it's February 10th that ain't nothing but January 41st
It's a continuation of January people come out the gates hot
Swinging the gym is packed and about February March people start slowing down that ain't nothing but January 98
98 days into the month whatever it is
Just just don't worry about somebody made a calendar and they called this month a different name than this month
And so now you now you slow down if you ain't where you want to be if your life ain't where you want to be
Why would you give yourself permission to slow down?
Just run your race and run it consistently
Whatever you're going to do this year run it with consistency
Don't burn yourself out and die and lay on the ground and you can't move for the next three months
Whatever you're going to do do it with consistency because I want greatness for you
If you're listening in here you want greatness for yourself
We want greatness for each other we want greatness for the people we're around in the only way that we're going to create greatness
Is if we could create consistency
That's the test of greatness
So
What are some things that you could do to be consistent?
I would encourage you whether you got to write it down
This has been in numerous studies writing down
The reasons why you're doing what you're doing your goals and look at them every damn day
Every morning
Every night look at them every day
But if you ain't about that you don't want to do that you don't want to write it down
I'll tell you I don't know how coachable you are
Already not listening to shit
But
If you're like man that ain't my thing I don't want to do that
At least every day just come in with your mindset glued on of like this is why I'm doing what I'm doing
This is what I'm doing reminding yourself see your goal see your vision see it and just work and control that next 24 hours
Can't control tomorrow. I may not even who knows if I get blessed with another day tomorrow
All I can control is today
Take it one day at a time and be consistent with your attitude and effort and your work
Ethic and all that stuff and good things are gonna happen stack one block on top of the next block on top of the next block
Don't worry about how old you are
keep working
People make excuses all day every age I'm two old I'm getting two old for this shit
I'm getting two old and then people too young then I'm 20. I'm all I'm too young
I don't need to work this hard. I got all my life
You got a bunch of excuses and the people around you got a bunch of excuses
And that's why the people that you become the top five people you spend a majority your time with if you're 50 60 years old
And you want to keep it going you better get yourself around 50 60 year old hustlers that are pushing that are moving that are grinding that are
Not talking about what they act and old and talking about what they used to do in their own hustle
People got excuses at every damn age
I'm too young. I'm still young. I got this much time or now I'm too old or now I'm this or now I'm that man
You're either growing or you're dying
And if you plan on growing it starts with consistency
All right, so let's make a decision this week. Let's take it one week at a time
We do the grindcast one week at a time this week
Let's focus on consistency and let's build on that the rest of the month if this message helped any one of you guys please
Don't send us no money. We don't make no money from this
Cost us money
All we're asking is if this helped you at all can is it worth 60 seconds?
Can you share it with somebody else so we can make a difference in those folks life? How about that deal
It's all I need appreciate your time. Thank you so much for spending more time with us on the grindcast
We appreciate you get ready as a new day
