Extreme Ownership

Count money, man.

Motherfuck grits.

I'm trying to talk, trying to talk to my beast blood.

What's up gang?

Welcome to another episode of The Grindcast.

Get ready.

It's some new day and we're going to talk about it.

A taking ownership, extreme ownership over your life and extreme ownership.

If you're a reader, you can't help but to think about Jocco Willick, retired Navy Silver

and brother in Jiu Jitsu out there, shout out to Jocco with his book, Extreme Ownership.

And I wanted to pull a couple things out of that book and around some other things that

just helps us understand that taking ownership of your life or of your leadership position

will set you free.

And so one of the points in Jocco's book was that there's no bad teams, only bad leaders.

That is a, that we're, let's start there.

Of it's easy.

I know a person's not where they need to be yet in leadership.

When things go wrong and they start to blame their team, they start to blame everybody

else.

Real leaders understand that the blame is on you, the blame is on us, the blame is on,

the buck stops here.

It's, it's, it's, it's the leader.

It's the coach.

The leader is responsible.

When, when you blame others, you give your power away.

When you take responsibility, you take back your power to transform your life.

Like, when I'm saying it's, it's them out there.

It's that out there, which may or may not be true, but I don't have any control over it.

But I do have control over is myself and my response to those things.

And the moment that you accept responsibility for everything in your life is the moment

you gain the power to change anything in your life.

When you think everything is somebody else's fault, you're going to suffer a lot.

Like you're going to suffer a lot.

When you realize that everything starts and springs only from yourself, you learn both

peace and joy.

That was something I stole from the Dalai Laba.

The, the victim mindset delutes the human potential.

Like if you're not accepting personal responsibility for our own circumstances, you greatly reduce

the power to change those things.

See a true leader takes 100% ownership of everything in his or her domain, including

the outcome and everything that affects that outcome.

I think this is the most fundamental building block of leadership that cuts across all other

principles.

It's, it's, it's taken ownership.

It applies to leadership at any level in any organization.

When, when something goes wrong, a true leader doesn't find excuses or blame others.

So this, this I was looking at a book and somebody said, Oh, don't quote him.

This urban myers in trouble.

I still don't know what urban myer did.

Apparently, urban myer did some wrong was drunk or something like that.

I forget what happened.

But I don't pay attention.

I don't watch the news clips.

I don't deal with negativity.

I don't look at none of that.

I don't know what urban myer did.

I don't want to judge her.

I admire on one day of his life.

You know, if that was one of the worst days of his life, what if everybody judged you based

on your worst day of your life?

So I don't put a lot into it.

There was a book that I got value in from urban myer.

And, and he was talking about E plus R equals O.

The event plus the response equals your outcome.

Now the event you can't always control, but the response is something you can always

control in the response.

The good news is how you respond dictates the outcome.

See a real leader puts aside his or her ego and takes full responsibility for the outcome.

They, they look at and review what they may do differently as a leader in order to create

success.

If an under performer is dragging the team down, it's the leader's role to train and mentor

that person.

If people aren't doing what they, what they should, it's the leader's responsibility

to clarify the mission, the action plan, get people's commitment, equip them to perform

at their roles or to get them up out of there.

But taking extreme ownership requires that you put aside your own ego and review what

you must do differently as a leader in order to create success.

This involves accepting criticism, winning the hearts and minds of people and building

clarity and building processes.

I think the more that you, that you take ownership, the more faith other people are

going to have in you.

Try see a team start to blame others, blame were blame and blame it.

I know that team is in trouble.

And if it's the leader, I know the leader's in trouble.

The leader's attitude is contagious.

When you demand this is critical, get what I'm saying right here.

This is for the leaders out there.

When you demand extreme ownership from yourself, other people that follow start to emulate

you in the mindset spreads throughout that organization.

So if the leaders always play in the blame game, it wasn't me, it was the leads.

Wasn't me, it was the sales rep.

Wasn't me, was the bus driver, was the weather.

Wasn't me, was they did me wrong.

Then all those other people in there start to, and so you lose ownership of what we can

control.

Rightness is, look, we can't always dictate what's going to happen either way.

We're going to bounce back.

We're going to own our stuff.

We're going to get better at our stuff.

Even if, even if 70% of it wasn't my fault, I'm going to try to find the 30% of the fault

that was mine.

Why?

Because I can't control the other person.

I can't control the 70% that was not my fault.

But I can control the 10% that was.

I can control, man, you know what?

I should have said that differently.

I should have handled that differently.

Here's what I can learn from that circumstance.

Here's how I can handle this in my marriage better, because I can't control her, but I can

control me.

Here's what I could have done better.

Taking ownership is powerful.

So many people blame the economy, the government, other people, all this other junk out there.

That's a losing mindset.

I heard Eric Thomas say this before.

He said, so many of us want guarantees from others, but nobody wants to make guarantees

to themselves or hold themself accountable to the same guarantees that they make themselves.

People have patience with themself, but not with others.

Oh, be patient with me.

That wasn't my intention.

I meant to wake up earlier this morning.

But let me tell you what happened.

My flight got delayed.

Or I meant to do this.

I meant to do that.

But let me tell you, be patient with me.

I'm just starting.

I'm just starting.

But can you have that same patience with others that you're allowing yourself?

Because we tend to judge ourselves based on our intentions and others based on their

actions.

You got to look internally.

What part of this argument is your fault?

What part of this problem is your fault?

Take ownership of the results?

There was a, I've been getting more into philosophy now, especially because Joey Crivelli is pounding

it down my throat.

He just loves some philosophy.

Epicitis, epititis, I'm going to screw that name up.

I'm just going to start to be patient.

Be patient with me.

But the quote that I'm pulling out of there says, no person is free who is not the master

of himself.

You can't be free if you're not the master of yourself.

If you can't control your own self, this person made me react that way.

This person made me do this.

I got so, your emotional, like to go to the next level, you have to start to create emotional

balance in your life.

I think it was more of a buffer to set if you can't control your emotions, you can't

control your bank account.

If you allow everybody out there to control and get an emotional reaction in you, you're

never going to have complete control of your life because people are always going to be

able to say and do things.

Outside circumstances are always going to come your way.

You got to learn how to take control and balance yourself.

Take control of yourself.

Take ownership of where you're at.

Take ownership for what's going wrong.

Take ownership for where you want to be.

Take ownership over your life.

And I promise you, it's a key ingredient and key step to you attaining and obtaining

the life and the joy that you desire.

So if this helped anybody out there, I just asked that you share this with somebody so

we can impact other people.

If you could share this podcast with somebody that you know, we would be able to influence

an impact and would be greatly appreciated as is the time that you've invested with us

today.

And we want to say thank you for joining us on another episode of the Grindcast.

Get ready as a new day.
