Greatness Takes Time
Show notes
I’ve learned not to rush things that need time to grow and greatness takes time! People often become impatient during the process, but you need to remember, it’s just that, a process! Check out today’s Grindcast!

Count money, man.
Money back riches.
I tried to try and told him I'm a beast.
But what's up, everybody?
Welcome to another episode of the grind cast.
Get ready.
It's a new day.
And we are playing through injury today.
So we are, my voice is, is, is slightly gone.
I wish I could say it was because I had a great time last night with screaming and hollering.
It's, it's, I got a little sinus thing going on and it's been working.
It's way down into now.
My voice is a little off, but I feel better than I sound right now.
And so rather than not push through the injury or the obstacle, you know how we do it over
here on the ground.
We got to, we got to make it happen.
So bear with me.
We're going to add some value today and, but just bear with me on the voice.
So today I wanted to, to talk to you about, you know, I guess it would be patience, but
just understanding that greatness takes time.
You know, anytime that you see someone doing something great, you know, you have to understand
that they put in an absurd amount of time and, and practice.
However it is that you're looking at that, that you see someone doing that's great.
It's, it's usually something that is, that has been years and years built upon a process
daily or weekly consistently over time.
And so don't think that you're going to get there by showing up and going half effort
or that you're going to be able to accomplish what they've accomplished in, in a year or,
or six months.
And, and I say that not to get you to think small, but I think people get discouraged because
it doesn't happen fast enough because they don't get to see where that person first
started in their journey.
When they first opened the doors to their business, what, what they had to go through, or when
they first started to learn how to box or how to, how to dribble or how to wrestle or
how to throw a football, you don't get to see the people that are walking in their element
when they first started.
And so you get discouraged.
This is, this is a key mindset or, or you're going to quit things often that you shouldn't
quit.
You're going to quit things and give up on your journey because you're discouraged
mentally when you're not, you're working against yourself because it's like working against
gravity.
It's just part of the process.
It's, it's, you know, even in currently right now, we just, you know, recently we had
our fundraiser for Steel City Impact here in Pittsburgh, the second annual cigar, celebrity
cigar outing and it was phenomenal.
It went, it went awesome.
And now we're in our second year and the struggles and the obstacles that we've went through
in our first year.
Many people would have never, you, you don't see it to the naked eye in the public because
we handle it all.
And the kids are getting served and the program is growing and the program has momentum, but
there's been a lot of things that we've had to overcome that if it wasn't for the mindset
of the people on the board.
And, and, you know, really I hate giving myself any credit, but just I went through this
with inspire minds when we started that in, in Youngstown and building a business.
And I've learned to not panic when things go wrong or obstacles happen because it's just
a part of the startup.
It's a part of the process.
It's, it's one thing if you want to pick up something middle of the road halfway
already done.
You know, it's like, you know, if you take in a kid that's 10 or 11 years old, you know,
you don't have to wake up in the morning and feed him a bottle.
You don't have to wake up when they cry at one o'clock in the morning.
They won't go to sleep.
You don't have to teach him how to brush their teeth.
You don't have to teach him how to bathe.
You know, if, if you're getting something halfway down the road already, it's a little
bit different.
But when you are bringing something from inception and oftentimes what you're trying to do
on your road to greatness is you're bringing yourself from, from the ground level up.
It takes time.
And what comes easy usually is not worth it.
And what is worth it usually doesn't come easy.
And so it's a process.
And so, so in that process, just, you got to be reminded that you got to show up and
you consistently got to show up with attitude, effort and focus.
And so those ain't three words that you haven't heard before.
But, you know, what is attitude?
Attitude is how you look at things, how you think of things, and how you speak of things.
And so it first really starts off with your mind and your attitude and your body will
flow with your mind.
And so, when things go wrong in the journey, when an obstacle happens, you know, like recently
I tore my bicep.
I was four or five weeks out from my next competition in Jiu Jitsu.
I was going to be going to Nashville.
I already started my weight cut.
I mean, I was, I was like feeling really good and really confident and putting a bunch
of work.
And when I tore my bicep, you know, the first two things that came to my mind, number
one was how long is it going to take me to get back?
Not nothing ever crossed my mind about quitting.
It's how fast can I get back?
What do I got to do to hurry up and get back?
Because I knew something was really wrong.
And the second thing was what does this make possible?
Because even though I was disappointed, even though it could have been discouraging, it
always I learned that whatever happens to you in the process, first of all, it's just
part of the process.
Nobody goes injury free, usually over time.
But whatever happens in the process, when obstacles arise, you have to ask yourself mentally,
what does this make possible?
Somebody quit and opens the door for a new start for somebody else.
Or you broke up with your girlfriend, you know, what does this make possible?
You start looking into your mind of what does this make possible?
So those are things in your attitude.
And it starts with your mind, how you're looking at things.
So if you start your day off and it's, oh, woe is me, poor is me, all these things are
going wrong versus looking at the blessing to it.
Or yeah, this is the divider that most people, when they tear their bicep or tear something
and they quit at 38 years old, about to be 39 years old, they're done.
They hang it up.
And so that's the separator, that's the, that's the divider.
That's what I'm looking at it as, as well, this is a point where if there was 100 people
in the country at the same level as me at the same age as me looking at the same thing
and they get the same injury, 90% of those people probably ain't going to come back.
And so it's your attitude of how you're going to look at things and the way that you're
choosing to look at things and then your effort.
This is something that you can control your effort.
Why would you allow somebody to outwork you?
If somebody could describe in the room that you're in or the business you're in, who's
the hardest working person in the room?
Why would you not allow your name to be the one to come up?
That's something that you can control.
You got to max out your effort and then focus.
Focus is staying on task when there's a bunch of other things going on.
And this is where people make excuses of, you know, I got this.
I got that.
These people are calling me emailing me, text me.
What do you do when all these people are you stick to your plan?
You stick to your schedule.
What did what did before there was mayhem?
What did you tell yourself you needed to get done today?
And what did you tell yourself you needed to do for the next hour or two hours?
And stay focused on it no matter what's going on.
So, you know, when you look at, you know, a, a basketball player in, in a fourth quarter
and, or the second half and there's five minutes left and the fans are screaming
and their signs in the audience and, uh, in the stands and they looking around
at all these people or what if their grandmother called them and didn't know they were playing basketball?
They ain't checking their phone answering their grandmother's call at that time.
The quarterback ain't worried about in the middle of the game, you know, too many things that are going on.
They got to stay focused on the task at hand.
And so I want to encourage you on the process to, to, to bring attitude, bring effort,
but stay focused on the things that matter the most.
You'll, you'll blow by 95% of people this way at, at whatever it is that you're trying to be
great at.
So what are you trying to be great at?
Can you stay focused for the whole year?
You know, right now we're, we're coming into the second quarter in a year.
We're closing out the first quarter.
Did you goal set?
Did you have goals?
How are your goals going?
Are you, are you going to stay consistent?
Can you get back on track, back on focus if you got off track?
And if you're on track, can you stay on track for another nine months?
Stay focused for the whole year.
Show up the whole year when you're supposed to.
Don't worry about what happened one day or what happened one week.
Just keep showing up when you're supposed to sometimes when you're getting better is when
you're actually getting your ass kicked.
It, it may seem like you're not getting better because you're losing, but that's when you
grow, that's when you are getting better.
That's when most people give up, that's when most people quick.
And so it's, it's not the conversations you need to have with yourself when you have a
record week.
It's the conversations you got to have with yourself when things don't go the way that you
wish that they would.
That's when you separate people.
So people get discouraged thinking that they're wasting their time in the process because
it's not happened fast enough or, or, or things didn't work out for a couple of months.
Part of getting better is making it through getting your ass kicked stage.
In whatever you show me somebody that got good at grappling or boxing or business or,
or, or anything great, they went through a stage where they got to ask it.
And you have to be able to make it through most people quit during the ass kick and stage
or they run from things that they know they're going to get their ass kicked at.
And it really, there's no growth in your comfort zone.
And so I've learned not to rush things that need time to grow when you're growing a plant.
Planning the seed, someone the seed is just the first step.
It won't grow without watering it and giving it sunlight and giving it care.
The same thing goes for your business, your project, your investments, your, your sports,
you know, whatever it is.
If you don't put the time and resources into it consistently,
you'll never see the fruits of your labor.
It's easy to get caught up in wanting to do it all or trying to shortcut your way to the next level of success.
But years of entrepreneurship have taught me that when I put my efforts into one craft at a time and focus
until I feel like I got it mastered, it's more likely to sustain over the long term,
trying to do it all often leads to doing nothing well.
And so, you know, one of the, my quotes I use all the time is, I think it was an African proverb is the man that
chases two rabbits at the same time catches none.
And so often I'll see people lose focus and I'll start trying to chase too many rabbits at one time.
Chase the, chase the main rabbit.
Stay focused on, on the main rabbit.
You can't do everything.
You only have so much energy in the day.
And remember that greatness takes time.
Cut the weak stuff out of your mind when obstacles come your way or hardships come your way.
You got to expect it.
Just show up and do the work consistently and watch where you're at over the next 12 months if you can just bring that type of energy.
