Life Is An Auction
Show notes
Life is an auction! If you want that job, that house, that championship, you have to be willing to “outbid” your competition by doing more, sacrificing more, & potentially overpaying to guarantee a win.

What's up gang?
Welcome back to another episode of The Grimecast.
Get ready.
It's a new day.
We're going to talk about life as an auction.
Life is an auction.
Overpaying is the cost of winning, right?
So overpaying is the cost of winning.
And so, you know, the analogy that you've here, you can hear some people use.
Life is more like an auction, not a retail store.
So, it's a zero sum game in most cases.
So, if you want a job, you want to marry that person, you want that house, you want to win that championship, you want to accomplish something great.
Nobody else can have that.
There are other jobs.
There's other people.
There's other houses.
There's other houses.
There's other championships.
There's other championships.
But if you want that one, you got to pay the price.
And typically, what happens is only the person willing to pay the most gets it because it's an auction.
And so, think about an auction for like a house, right?
It goes to the highest bidder.
So, if there's an auction or a charity function you go to and they're having an auction, it goes to the person that's willing to pay the most for that item.
For that thing, for that trip.
It's whoever's willing to pay that price.
And so, they pay more sometimes, they'll pay more sometimes and it's actually worth at certain times, at certain auctions.
It may be by a dollar, it may be by a million, but they were willing to pay a little bit more than the competition was willing to pay.
And so, this thing goes beyond money.
It's just really life and taking things to the next level.
You got to pay more, you got to sacrifice more, you got to work longer, you got to work harder.
It's those types of things.
So, you know, recently I was back in my hometown for a minute and I have a young man that I've been trying to spend some time with and he's in seventh grade and he's a quarterback.
And he's had some obstacles this year.
And so, I try to think of different things I can do with them.
And so, after going to get some wings together, we went, I took him to Youngstown State, FCS, D1 football.
We took him to the locker room, took him to meet the coach and as we were meeting Coach Doug Phillips, we were sitting down talking and we were talking about his quarterback, Bow Brungard.
And if you look up some of his stats, I mean, he can run it, he can throw it.
This guy, probably, you know, with the NIL stuff can probably go to a big time, D1 school to go play somewhere.
He can run with his legs, he's rushing for 100 yards, throwing for a couple of hundred yards in games.
And he's a good man, he's a good young man.
And he's like, you know, this kid lives here.
Everybody in the locker room, anyone in the area in the football offices, it seemed like every person we talked to about Bow Brungard, a quarterback, they said he lives here.
He might as well just put a bet here. He lives here.
And Coach, like he's probably here right now, let me go see, he goes, boom, they go look for him and he's watching film or he's game planning and they come introduce him to my young friend that I was hanging with Mason.
And that's the story of his career.
But I also think that's the story of long term winning at the highest levels is you got to be willing to pay that price.
He's probably willing to put more in sacrifice more than most people are willing to pay when it comes down to winning.
And so it comes down to your willingness.
Like what is your willingness to do with other people are not willing to do in business, you got to find a way to do with your competitors are not willing to do and what they're not doing.
You got to find a way to provide a service that nobody else is providing, whether it's the way that you treat people, the way that you go about it.
Sometimes it's not even what you do, it's how you do what you do going above and beyond the call of duty doing things that nobody else will be willing to do.
And so whether it's that or offering cheaper prices or you either strengthen yourself or you weaken your competition.
And the same thing goes in romantic relationships that you got to provide more value sometimes than other people that are interested in those folks are able to provide in value.
And everyone's values are different.
If the cost of winning sometimes is overpaying, there's a chance that winning will be disappointing.
Winning could be a net loss at the end because sometimes you got to overpay overpaying typically guarantees a win, but a win doesn't always guarantee happiness.
Winning what you want doesn't always make you happy. This is where you've seen athletes win a Super Bowl or they've won a championship and at the end of that they're like, hey, what are you feeling?
You know, is this an amazing feeling and they're like, yeah, but nowhere near what I thought it was going to feel like after all this that I went through the witness title, the witness Super Bowl.
Winning what you want doesn't always make you happier, keep you happy.
Happiness isn't found outside of yourself. The real value in winning and winning what you want is in the process of recreating yourself.
That's why what we try to explain and teach here in the organization is it's not about what you get.
It's about who you become on that journey.
In order to win, in order to go to the next level and things, you've got to become a different, the best version of yourself. You've got to become someone that is so much greater than the normal in order to get those results.
That it's about who you became. Now you're stuck with that person. You became that person and now that's what that's what the real win is. That's what the real payoff is is who you become on the journey.
That's why you just got to fall in love with the process. What you want is in the process of recreating yourself. You become more competent. You become more strong.
Years of disappointment, sacrifice, perseverance, despite all of that isn't worth the trophy, but it could be worth achieving your real potential as a human being and the beast and the person that it makes you become.
Winners win, not because they understand the trophy. Winners win because they understand the real value is in the process.
The practice, the not giving up, the rehabilitating yourself when you're injured, the long nights, the early mornings, the practice in longer and harder than everybody else.
The watching more videotape than everybody else, the spending more relationship time to build bonds than anybody else. True value is in the transformation.
And it always takes longer and it always costs more than you think it's going to cost. It's kind of like building a house.
Whatever that number is, when they say it's usually always more expensive and it usually always takes a little bit more time.
Winners and losers in winning and losing. Winners and losers, winners and losses, it's all a fact of life. Like it or not. That's just life.
The desire to win with the unwillingness to overpay is what tortures people. That, man, I want to win so bad.
I want to be that. I want to be this, but you're not willing to overpay to get that price over overpay to get that thing that it is that you want.
That's what brings torture and really that's what really brings the biggest haters in my experience is the people that are not willing to pay the price that somebody else is willing to pay, but they both wanted the same thing.
So they couldn't get that same thing. And so they just got to hate on the person to make themself feel bigger feel better.
What you got to do is you got to be content with what you have.
Or be willing to overpay to get to the next level because you don't get to it's not always an even trade off of like all right.
I'm going to give you $100 so I get this right back in value. Sometimes you got to pay the price for two years without any return back of all that investment that you made of your time and energy finally to make a jump up.
And then to go to the next level, guess what? You got to overpay again without maybe getting that value immediately right back.
Life rewards those that pay in that overpay. Not those that complain about this isn't fair. You know, I'm a father. I got young kids and they're all.
That isn't fair. And I'm always like, Hey, life isn't life isn't fair. Life doesn't care what you think you deserve. Life don't even always give you what you deserve.
Winners aren't lucky. They're just willing to do the things or pay more than the competition. And really the winners are willing to keep going after the competition taps out and says, I can't take no more.
That's what it's really it's about perseverance. In most cases is that I'm willing to overpay and willing to pay this price and I'm willing to run this marathon.
Not a sprint with this quick reward. I'm willing to stick with it over the long haul. And so as we go into the week. Let's let's think about let's think about what is our winning.
What are we striving for? What is the goal? What do we want to accomplish? And are you overpaying right now the way that you should? Are you investing? What it is that you should?
And understanding that you're receipt for that. Your automatic return for that is not in the trophy.
It's in the person that you become on the journey. And so go ahead and pick out that thing that you want. The good thing is the paddle is in your hand. You're in control.
You're at the auction is a live auction. Who is willing to pay that price? And who's willing to do it the longest? And who's willing to do it after they get knocked down?
Life is an auction. And I want to encourage you to win this week. That's how we win for the year. You win one week at a time. And so as the year starts to wrap up, let's start to build some momentum.
We appreciate you guys as always. Thanks for joining us on another episode of the Grandcast. Get ready. It's a new day.
