Winner’s Mentality
Show notes
Winners are made more than they are born. People are born with all different types of potential, but it comes down to adopting a winner’s mentality and a winner’s work ethic to maximize your potential.
While filming, we had an uninvited guest in the GRINDcast studio. Check out the video version of this week’s podcast at the 5:15 mark here at https://youtu.be/zw_d4kVdKjY

Count money, man.
Money, man.
That grits us.
I'm trying to told him I'm a beast, but.
Good morning and welcome back to another episode of the Grindcast.
Get ready.
It's a new day.
And we're going to talk about winners are made more than they're born.
Winners are made more than they're born.
Of course, you're depending on what you're talking about, a sport, life, business, whatever
it is.
You know, you may think, you know, somebody has a little bit more size and speed.
How could you say that person isn't born?
Well there's going to be a lot of people with size and speed.
There's going to end up being a little bit more to it, but over the long haul of life.
Because I, to me, winners, you know, there's like, you can win an event or you can be a
winner in all things, like just a winner as a person, winner of life.
Because it's not about just what you do.
It's about who you are and it's about who you become on the journey, meaning, you know,
just because you win a race in track don't mean necessarily that you're a winner, right?
So winners rise above adversity, you know, over time.
You're going to have moments on your journey no matter what it is.
You know, I've had an opportunity to mentor and go alongside of a lot of people that have
risen from essentially nothing.
And when I've had an opportunity to watch them and play a role in their life, all of them,
all of them had at least one thing in common.
There's more than one, but all of them had at least one thing in common, which is that
they overcame adversity.
There's just going to be opportunities for you in life to overcome adversity.
And you're going to have those moments where that adversity is either going to take you
to the next level or it's going to cause you to crumble.
But the winners, they don't, they don't back down.
They don't let those moments cause them to crumble.
They learn from them and they rise.
They learn from them and they elevate.
I think another one is, you know, there's a lot of, I think having a vision is huge.
Being a dreamer is huge.
Some people lack that piece is they don't have a big enough vision.
They don't dream enough.
They don't see enough.
They just kind of go throughout the day without looking at a big picture.
But I think once you get the vision piece down, once you become a dreamer of like, man,
what could this be?
What, how big could this become?
How far could I go?
Then it comes down to you got to be a doer.
You know, there's a difference between dreamers and doers.
The doing part, that's, that's, that's a lot tougher than the dreaming part.
The doer, the doing part, creates the dream.
It makes the dream possible.
And so the doer is the person getting up on a weekly basis, daily basis, putting into
work, doing the things that necessarily they may not feel like doing.
And I think when you're talking about winning, we got to look at every obstacle as an opportunity.
And I think it makes sense to us when you're mentoring and coaching and talking to other
people, right?
So if you're coaching somebody right now and whatever walk a life you're in and you say,
you know, they're going through an obstacle, they have an obstacle that they need to overcome.
You know, I think it's normal for you to explain how that obstacle is going to create an
opportunity for them, how that obstacle is going to make them better, how that all the opportunities
in it.
I think what's harder though is taking your own advice, as when it's your turn to hurdle
that obstacle.
When it's your turn to overcome that obstacle, can we give ourselves the exact same advice
that we would give to somebody else and remind ourselves, this is an opportunity.
A lot of the times, you know, what I've tried to bring up that I've learned is what does
this make possible?
Every obstacle is an opportunity.
What is your opportunity?
What is this making possible right now?
Whatever the obstacle is you're going through right now, think about all the ways that
it could be making something possible for you, making you better.
What are the ways?
Look at the possibilities, look at the opportunities in it.
A winner's mindset isn't all, this isn't something that you're born with.
You might be born with size and speed, but the mindset, that's not something that everybody's
born with.
Winner's mindset isn't something that they're necessarily born with, you know, to me
is forged in struggle, right?
So you could be born with size, you could be born with speed, but you're not born with the
mindset.
I don't think.
I think that mindset to go to these other levels is like a warrior mindset.
And the thing about it, and the thing about it is that sometimes when you hear warrior
mindset, you're thinking to like some big muscular dude maybe, but I know some five foot tall
120 pound women that got a warrior mindset.
It ain't about the muscles in your body.
It ain't even really about the physical attributes as much as it is your mental.
And so to me that mental muscle is forged in struggle just like building muscle in your
body, right?
You want to build your legs up, your quads up, your arms up, what up?
You got to put them through struggle.
You got to get that couple last reps when you think you can't get no more.
You need a little bit of assistance with it.
And then you got to build yourself back up.
You got to put some protein in it.
You got to put some carbs in it.
You got to put some healthy fats in it.
You got to put some, you got to nourish your body after you break it down.
So in the struggle, right, after you struggle, you pour the right things into your mind
and then you build yourself back up.
To me, that's how you build a winning mindset, right?
None of us want to struggle.
None of us want to have horrible major obstacles at versity in our life, but that's what is
going to forge you.
That's what's going to take you to the next level.
That's what develops that mindset.
And then if you want to be a winner, you need relentless work ethic.
Like there's levels to this.
There's people out there that think that they work hard, right?
There ain't a ton of people that don't think they work hard.
But there's levels to this.
You got to understand that your definition of working hard and a real champion's definition
of working hard is two different things.
Go study the greats.
Go study Tiger Woods, how much work he put in, how many hours he put in, how many reps
he put in.
Go study the late Kobe Bryant here and about him at the gym at five o'clock in the morning
already shooting, sweating, all that stuff.
Like go look into the real greats and you're going to find more often than not a relentless
work ethic.
Those are sports analogies.
Now this is the same thing in business and in other areas of life.
Show me the baddest attorney.
Show me it's going to be a relentless work ethic.
And that work ethic, most people would think is crazy.
That's what gets you to the 1%.
That level of sacrifice, that level of work ethic.
And so I would just really stop and do an analysis and say, all right, if you think you're
working hard, how hard like compares to who compares to what?
To the greatest, to the best or to like average people because you can't compare yourself to
average people if you want to be up there with the winners.
You can only compare yourself to the greatest.
And so I think you have an opportunity every time you want to elevate is who are you comparing
yourself to to bring yourself the real, the real reality of how hard you need to work.
Are you comparing yourself to the best person in your industry, the best person in your
business, the best person around you?
Have you studied what they do on a weekly basis, daily basis, the work ethic that they're
putting in, that they have put in, and are you comparing yourself to that, or are you
comparing yourself to average and you're telling yourself you're working hard?
You've heard it before.
Success is a journey, not a destination, right?
So we got to continuously push yourself forward.
And I think I've watched, have you watched people that have had success and then all of
a sudden they lose it, they have success and then all of a sudden they lose it?
It's usually because they have a destination in their mind.
Like once I do this or once I hit this, then I'm going to chill out, then I'm going to
do, and there's not wrong with that, but to me the highest level is a success.
You got to push that finish line back.
You got to give yourself that next challenge because you're either growing or you're dying,
that's why it's a journey.
You got to just embrace it as like this is just what we do, this is our lifestyle.
And to get real growth, you got to push yourself beyond your limits.
Again, I'm going to go back to the working out analogy of like when somebody's trying
to get faster, oftentimes you'll see somebody pulling them back with like bands, rubber bands,
to push them beyond their limits.
And then you take that off and things get a little bit faster.
The growth in your body and the growth in your life is by pushing yourself beyond your
current limit, then you get growth, then your limit pushes a little bit further, then
that becomes the limit and you got to try to push yourself beyond that limit a little
bit and then you're going to grow and you're going to adapt and you're going to get used
to it.
And then all of a sudden the more you push those limits, the more you look like if you
keep doing it, you're going to turn around one day and say, man, my warm up is what used
to be my limit in life, in the weight room, in whatever it is, it's by pushing your limits.
Now winners trust their vision, even other people around them don't, and other people
around them doubt.
Because when you're pushing to do something great, you're going to have a bunch of people
around you, hating on you, a bunch of people talking about you, a bunch of people saying,
why are you wasting your time with that?
That's never going to work because if you have a big vision, it's usually something
that is like, man, this is a 1% of people do this, 5% of people do this.
That's a big vision, right?
Because the smaller the vision, the more people that accomplish it.
So if you have a size of a vision that's big, that means less people accomplish it.
That's a 1% vision, that's a 5% vision.
Well guess what?
The other 95% they're looking at you like you're crazy.
If you want to go after that top 5%, because people are usually separated by the way they
think, and the way that they work.
And so the way that you think and the way that you work are going to be a lot different
than average people when you're pushing to be great.
And so if you listen to the noise and you listen to the voices from the people saying,
you can't do that.
That's crazy.
Why would you go try to do that?
Why would you accomplish that?
Why would you take that risk?
Why would you do these things?
It's because you have a big vision and you'll match it up with some big work ethic.
And people that don't get into that top 1% of whatever it is, not just financially,
top 5% of whatever it is, it's usually because of the way that they think and the way that
they work.
And so when you think a certain way and you work a certain way to the outside world,
they're like, man, you're crazy.
This is nuts.
Why are you doing that?
That got to be wrong.
That's because it's abnormal.
Just by sheer numbers and data, if it's 5%, that means the other 95% ain't working and thinking,
the way you work and thinking.
So what you think they're going to think about you.
Now the danger is this is family members, this is friends, and that's why you got to watch
the company you keep into people you listen to.
You got to be hanging around people that are on the same mission that work like that.
Think like that if you want to go to the next level.
But ultimately you can't be relying on external validation.
Other people, I want other people to say, they support me, I want other people to say,
they believe in my.
Believe in my dream. It ain't their dream is your dream
And if you don't learn to go out on your do step out on your dream your vision
You're gonna always be held down by what other people's thoughts are
The key to a big vision and to keep on pushing is your vision got to be fueled by a purpose that's bigger than yourself
Who are you doing is for?
Who are you trying to impact?
Because that purpose pushes you even when the motivation fades
There's gonna be times on your journey. There's gonna be times in
Your struggle in your grind in your process. There's gonna be times in there where
The motivation isn't there
That's why you got a lean on that purpose that why that that's why that purpose that why statement that mission
It got to be so big
That it gets you up when you don't feel like it
It gets you up more times than you fall down
Because it's so big
You got to act on the purpose even when the odds are stacked against you
Winners see I think people think sometimes that the people they see winning that they don't feel any fear
That's not true winners feel that fear
Everybody ends up having some of that fear and feel some of that the winners act themselves
Into feeling anyway the winners act on it anyway they keep pushing fear is a sign that you're at the edge of breakthrough
Fear is a sign that you're pushing yourself outside of that comfort zone and it really
The best way to to develop the confidence to overcome that fear is the work
And the winners work when nobody's watching
Are you working hard when nobody's watching?
Are you putting into work when nobody's watching when nobody's clapping for you if you need people to hold you accountable?
We all I'd love to have it's good to have people to hold you accountable, but you should need it
It's good to have people to meet you at the gym, but you can't need it
You got to have that purpose something fueling you that you can attach to that because you got to be able to work when nobody's watching
If we want to win we got to eliminate distractions
What things are you distracted by right now? Are you distracted overly distracted by anything by?
some extra curricular activity
By video games or whatever it is not to say you can't do some of those things, but
Just doing assessment are you are you overly it? Are you distracted by that? Are you distracted by who you're dating?
Are you distracted by the dating process?
Or you locked in or are you focused?
And this is where it goes back to like do you want to be mediocre or do you want to be great because greatness isn't fair
Winning isn't fair
Meaning man, I just want to be normal, you know, why can't I be why can't I you know date like everybody else or you know
Whatever it is like everybody else
If you want to be like everybody else and you're gonna get what everybody else gets
But that that 1% that top that top of the mountain that top of the food chain
It ain't fun to get there sometimes that's what separates everybody as your ability to sacrifice your ability to focus your ability to give up things that nobody else
Would want to give up because the enemy of of some of that stuff is good
The enemy of great is being good you can't let good be good enough
But you still got to stay grounded and be grateful for where it is that you're currently at that's the balance
Right are you are you you can get overly to the point where it's like man, I'm grateful that I'm so grateful. I'm just content
like I
Don't want to progress and that's fine
But you're gonna get what you get out of that and so
And then there's a different level of like men. I'm so grateful
Truly genuinely grateful, but I want to go to the next level and
Make sure you're spending enough time
acknowledging all the things you're grateful for like
What are you grateful for?
Have you had an opportunity any time recently in the last week to count your blessings?
I had a friend tell me before they they heard and they said
What if you woke up
tomorrow
Only with the things that you thank God for today
In regardless of your religious beliefs just like
What if you woke up tomorrow
Only with the things that you were grateful for today
What if you woke up next week would only the things that you were grateful for the week prior
And so have you looked at all the things in your life?
That's your grateful for and as as we close out on this
winning
You know mindset, you know, I think that spirit of gratitude also
brings with it a spirit of humility
Not to be confused
With the spirit of weakness or passiveness, but I think you could really start to tap into new levels of strength
In life when you learn that you could be humble and strong at the same time that you could be humble as a person and have humility
And also have a big enough
Ego when it's needed to go out there and be great in the balance of the two
But I think that some of the foundational things to humility is is is it's coupled with gratitude
And as as we close out
I just want it like let's let's be thankful for the process because I think winners
Embrace the process not just the outcome
Right if you want the greatest outcome you got to have the greatest process in the process is where we start to separate
Ourself from everybody else because it gets messy in those moments it gets messy in the moment
Don't let the messy moment stop you from your dream
In the process because it's not fun in that moment in that season in that block of life in that year in that six month period in that quarter in that three year period
Be thankful for the process
Start to have faith in if you're putting in the ultimate work if you're putting in the the
The max capacity of the way that you could work and you're working on yourself
You're working on your mind you're working on your soul you're working on your craft you're putting to work in
Then you got to trust the process and control the things that you can control even when it doesn't work out in your favor
Temporarily you got to you got to believe that there's a bigger reason for that all you can do is control
What you can do all you can do is all you can do
But let's just go out there and do all that we can do because that's what winners do
So if there's anybody out there that you think we could help with this message if there's anybody out there that you think it benefit from this message
Let's not be selfish. Let's take
10 seconds out and share this message with somebody out there that you think we can impact their life and as always you know we're grateful
In the spirit of gratitude we're grateful for the time that you've invested in the spending with us here on the grindcast
Get ready. It's a new day and we're looking forward to talking to you next week. Let's get it
